I have had mixed results with outdoor beds of subs so far which I think is
because I do use too little spawn and expand at a too high ratio which
gives competition the chance of taking a solid foothold when spawning
straight into a bed in the ground. This time around I will play it safe and
leave everything in planters and not do a bed.

I guess I need someone to tell me what a solid spawn to fermented and
pasteurized wood chips ratio is to start off? .....and from there I
think I read that doubling the volume once fully colonized is the way
to go forward?

Got some good looking silky growth and will be ready for the next part soon.

Yes. Low spawn ratio gives competitors more time to develop.
Also, grainspawn. If you want to play it really safe you can consider doing an extra step in the form of grain to sterile wood chips. And then use that wood spawn for your patch, rather than grains, straight to pasteurised or fermented chips.

I like ridiculously high spawn ratios when I go this route, like 1:3. Because why not. High spawn ratio improves chances of first year fruits dramatically and using wood spawn rather than grain spawn also makes for much stronger foothold for the mycelium.
It's quite easy to expand wood 2 wood before spawn, for example like I did here:

Colonized bags of sterile chips, inoculated with half a jar of grain spawn.

These chips were only soaked for 2 days. No further treatment. 1 bag for 6 or 8 of these flower pots. I also did a leaky cement tub that ripped open at the bottom from frost.

This was so convenient and easy in fact, that I took some healthy myc from most of my 'important' patches and made a flower pot with each. I think this is a great way of having a backup of your patch:

Super easy. If you want an extra patch next year all you do is soak some chips and expand from your source flower pot into oblivion. Or if you move to another place. You just take your favorite patches with you 😀

Leftover Cyanescens pots fruiting.

Holy, that is so awesome, thanks a lot for the detailed response Tweeq.
That is nice work.

OK, going to sterile grain first and then expand to more chips. Bags are
not an option atm but 20 jars will be plenty for my plan. I got a 70 liter
stainless steel pot here which I am planning to use for expanding.

At what time of the year are you putting them down?

:whathesaid:

When I started out I spawned about 1:20 - 1:25. Most of those beds fruited, but it took 18 - 30 months.

Influenced by Tweeq I layed out the subaer beds 1:4 last year and they fruited after six months, and very prolifical.

Also, I don't know how you built up those beds that didn't fruit for you. But digging away the topsoil helps a lot with competing mycelia. Established mycelia can overrun new sub very fast in some cases. By removing the layer in which you can expect them, your spawn has better chances of settling in. And once it's a thick mat it is way more likely to overrun the neighbors instead of vice versa.

Once you've got them running on chips, you can just keep expanding and keep making backups. Just a handful of leftover chips can be a bucketfull in a month. That bucket can build you a patch and two handfulls of chips for a couple of buckets next month, etc

Cheers man, that is exactly what I have not done, I planted the beds under
some trees and did not remove the top layer, needless to say that there was
quite a bit of debris, dead twigs and such. The patches did fruit at least
a little and some were OK but later on other mushrooms popped up and
completely annihilated the patch.

I think I know now where to put the patch, got a brick path around the back
which is in the shade most time of the day. I will stack up bricks as
surround and put down a patch in there, that could easily be modified/expanded
too.

Thanks for the offer PD! I will have another crack at this again with a
solid strategy but if that doesn't fly I'll come knocking on your door.
Good to be back at it.

A walk in the forest with uncle Churp

Drink up your coffee, kids, and let's go check some beds! Put your boots on, the forest is soaking wet.

Most likely azurescens, but this bed is not on my hand-drawn maps so it could be cyan, too. We'll see how large they get.

Look at that piece of forest floor! It's subaers, F1 from a wild Australian print.

Let's take a closer look at this bed that was completely plowed by wild boar this spring.

They just dgaf and fruit from clumps of myced-together chips.

Look, cyans!

Now it's time to go home and drool over the zapos again.

Next time (hopefully): alleni, serbica, aztecorum and caeruleorhiza.

I have some cool stuff fruiting and you guys are going to have to believe me because it won't let me upload pictures. Just close your eyes and imagine cool pictures below 👇 😂

It's truly insane how some of you guys get Woodlovers to grow every single season. Here it's been so dry until now there was no chance of fruiting, and now there's a risk of frosts. :frown:

The only thing keeping me sane is the thought how the mycelia will be (hopefully) spreading in the nice habitats I chose for them.

But thankfully the Cyanescens are still out doing their thing around town

More Cyans

I’m new to Allenii but I think these is thems.

That is to say I spawned Allenii tn this planter..  still waiting on serbica and subaeruginosa. Our normal fall rain returned yesterday so fingers crossed.

I'm wondering if woodlovers are so slow, or do I have poor genetics. Temps at night range from 2 to 8 degrees and around 15 degrees during the day.
It is supposed to be azurescens. It's 14 days since I observed first pins.

Damn them some slow boys! I guess I never really paid attention to how long they take because I have other things going on.... That does seem excessive though. You watering enough? They look currently wet in this pic but that may not always be the case. That's the only thing I can think of.

Tax:

I figured I can just upload cults to Inaturalist and then share here considering I can't post pictures directly here.

Great shrooms, guys! Has anyone managed to grow Ps. serbica? I haven’t yet. I’m wondering how it’s going with serbica on your end.

Though... This is Ps. cyanescens indoors. The experiment was successful!

Very pretty.

Haven't tryed culting serbica yet tho some year il make it down the list...

What type of substrate u end up using for those wavy caps / pseudo casing or casing and any idea on temp range it lived through n fruited in? Much appreciated all around xd
