Because the fridge will suck the moisture out of the plates. Store poured plates at room temp. They'll last the longest with thicker pours. I just used some plates yesterday that I poured literally almost a year ago.

It causes condensation.

The simplest way to store a culture for long term is just to pour a thick plate. That will stay hydrated for 6 months to a year. Even if it dehydrates totally, just do a hot pour over top to revive the culture.

I don't put anything of mine in the fridge.

Back with more jars πŸ™ˆ Can't tell if this is problematic condensation or not? I noticed it today, but there's also been a 5 degree Celsius temp decrease in the room since yesterday. All five were done with agar wedges from two different plates exactly one week ago. Grain was a bit wet to begin with.

I imagine if I just keep waiting it will become more obvious, but curious on thoughts.

Thanks!

I think it's just safe condensation due to temp changes.

The signs of bacteria are more on the grains themselves, if they looked wet, squished against the sides.

Good job it seems! I hope you have micropore under your lid at least.

This spot looks maybe a little bacterial, but not a huge concern if you're just gonna spawn the jar to a shoebox or something with a low ratio. The wetness on the grain stuck to the glass there is milky colored, which is generally considered indicative of a bacterial biofilm. As far as the condensation in the top of the jar, that's just from temp swings and not really a concern!

It looks like normal condensation for over hydrated grain. So far it looks ok but it does give bacteria an upper hand. I do agree that 1 grain looks like it could be off but I can't tell if the liquid around it is cloudy. Let's hope it's all good!

I've lost the link to a very simple grain prep tek.  Basically the tek is to load 1 cup of grains into a quart mason jar, add 1/2 cup of water then pc.  Can anybody point me to that tek?  There was a discussion about dealing with lumps of grain that I want to see.  I've tried it and I'm getting lumps of grains that I can't break up even after aggressive shaking.
