I wanted to continue on my Jewish literature train so I picked up and started The Jews and The Left by Batya Ungar-Sargon.

It’s a topic I am very interested in, as a leftist Jew who now finds herself politically homeless, lost, hurt, and confused in a post Oct7 world.

I quickly found the author’s right wing bias to be pretty obvious, which like, is fine I guess. I’m media literate and am comfortable reading people’s views how don’t align with me, but it just seems like a book like this should be written by a leftist Jew you know? I looked her up and I guess she identifies as a “MAGA Marxist” whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. Idk I was hoping the book was something it wasn’t.

The book is shelved for now, I might come back to it.

I decided to read Hostage by Eli Sharabi instead, a memoir about his 491 days in Hamas captivity after the Oct 7 massacre.

Note: this is not an invitation for political debate. Please miss me with that.

You ever read The Pity Of It All by Amos Elon? That's one of the best books I've ever read.

A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through. It's about the rise of the Klan in the 1920s, specifically in Indiana, and the Indiana Grand Dragon, D.C. Stephenson, a violent serial rapist who eventually savagely rapes a woman, Madge Oberholtzer, who subsequently dies and the Klan goes down in the scandal.

A difficult read (in large part because basically no one except D.C. will ever see justice for the crimes you read about in the book) but at the same time an accessible history of the Klan in the 20s and it gives you an insight into the motivations of the men at the top: making an unbelievable fuck ton of money (D.C. was making the modern equivalent of $80 per Kluxer signed up by taking 40% of their dues. D.C. was signing up two thousand men every single week across the Midwest. 80 x 2000 = 160,000/week)

What's this about?

:tellmeastory:

A woman gets caught up in a time loop and repeats the same day over and over while her husband repeats the same day and doesn't remember. Similar to ground hog day. It's very repetitive. But it really gets to the bottom of being alone in place and time. Pretty cool concept
