Josex tek is just talking about cleanliness which, obviously, less agar means less things getting transferred over therefore generally cleaner agar. Thats not what Im talking about though Im talking purely about the strength of the mycelium itself which in my experience and in “the redditors” experience has shown that larger agar (to a certain extent) leads to generally stronger mycelium [with the caveat obviously being A GENERALLY HIGHER RISK OF TRANSFERRING BACTERIA etc when transferring from unclean samples]

B. These were dirty wild spores that I got gifted so Im not looking for canopies, Im growing them out to try and hybridize them in the next generation, and I already said that I was aware the plates werent normal looking or particularly healthy. So the “it took you multiple transfers to get garbage plates” is an unnecessary insult just because I barely disagreed with you. Everything in this community is learned through seeing what works and what doesnt and that includes stacking agar transfers like a pyramid and seeing what happens.

C. You just sound pompous here. Just because the dudes a CPA and posting on reddit doesnt make his findings illegitimate or wrong. Do you know what Pastywhyte or Bod or Josex does for a living? No. Mush love:mushroom2:

He has a point n he mighta been blunt about it though I think you've got a misunderstanding about the process somehow.

It doesn't mean shit how healthy your mycelium is or aggressive kinda in my opinion.

If you start with somewhat dirty stuff (every single spore unless ur a mycologist God)

Then ur gonna want to cleanup and cleanup fast.

Smaller samples lead to cleaner spawn quicker which will prevent senescence or aging of ur culture in a negative way.

Sure u can transfer a smallish/medium size agar triangle though the chances bacteria grows interwoven with the culture is much much much higher and u won't notice it unless ur really paying attention

At same time u work with really small samples and ul know when u have contams mixed and makes it easier to decide to scratch it n go back to step 1 or attempt cleanup.

Also I really want to point out the best yields I have had was from cube mycelium that was purely tomentose and to tons of people standards wouldn't make they're cut because they want rhizomorphic or thick growth.

And as some have stated super thick growth on agar can mean not so good things also like u spawn that thick culture n u get unworldly overlay from the clouds fr.

There's much more to mycology than (healthy mycelium)

Having clean mycelium to work with is just as if not more important to my understanding though I would love the vets personal opinion of this.

Sorry to have hurt your feelings with a little truth. You have a lot of nerve to call me pompus, when you litterally search and find 1 single argument that appears to back up your point. If you ask Pastywhite, Bod or Josex what they think about your CPA from redit I'm betting thay would back my view that smaller transfers are better and they don't mean weaker myc. If I can grow healthy Myc from a microscopic poke then you can get healty myc from a small transfer. The fact your CPA seems to think there is something better about rhyzomorphic over tomentose has been debased numerous times. Some myc never go rhizo at all. I could take an hour and go over everything he had wrong in his post but I won't

As to your dirty "WILD SPORES" feel free to send them to me and I bet I have clean myc in less than 3 transfers.

Hey Baba Yaga, grain is looking okay for 5 days unless Im mistaken. I didnt mean for this thread to turn so negative but that rocket dude caught me on a bad day and pissed me tf off lol, I was just trying some out some weird experiments and the dude chose to insult me instead of just offer information. I barely even disagreed with him but his tone just set me off into a fugue state and had me playing devils advocate😂 — I wont be experimenting with pyramid agar transfers anymore lol but like I said before I think theyll do fine at grain nonetheless. As for the normal transfer I took, its been 4 days and looks like itll turn out nice if everything else fails. Lmk what you think

Yeah I agree with virtually all of that, that was the whole thing that annoyed me was I originally just said “eh I slightly disagree” and the rocket dude just treated me like I was an idiot bc I mentioned a redditors finding about transfer size and the CPA insult just seemed like such a unrelated thing to nitpick when 99% of the knowledgable people on here as well arent full time mycologists.

I usually start with small transfers and once I have super clean myc I transfer a moderately sized circle because like I said earlier I think larger transfers when transferring from CLEAN agar usually end up stronger and more aggressive ime. This was just an experiment and it looked so strange I wanted to see if someone saw something weird in it that I didnt. I completely 100% agree that smaller transfers are better for cleaning the culture but I think using both is usually best. I almost exclusively use tomatose samples too, so I didnt mean rhizomorphic by “stronger,” I could care less if theyre rhizo, I just meant healthier as in the colonization speed, color, and uniform breadth of it. At the end of the day this is all just semantics and minor differences in opinion but I do still stand by my opinion that that rocket dude is a pompous prick😂

Next time Ill just have to add more context to my posts lol, but thanks for the input and responding with actual information instead of little jabs. Mush love!

Transferred these to grain but was wondering if these cultures are healthy? I know P. Cyan mycelium is whispier but do these look okay or if I should've waited for another transfer? (I transferred two of the fluffy overlay circles to agar but they likely wont goto grain anytime soon)

The top is a Florida Pan Cyan and the bottom is a “fire dancer” Cambodian variety.

This looks like another stone making pan imo. I doubt you’ll be able to clone away.

Pretty messed up someone said you have shitty agar skills when it’s just the culture doing what pans sometimes do.

Funny I just brought this up in the Official Pan thread. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29668349#29668349

Yes stone making Panaeolus. He he, haha…Let’s break it down.

Stone making…this actually refers to sclerotia being made in the substrate by different species. Most people (looks like you fit this category) only know that Mexicana or Tampanensis make these sclerotia. Others know that Panaeolus cinctulus also make sclerotia. Still others (such as myself) know that other Panaeolus will every now and then produce sclerotia too. I myself have found them on Cambo, Cyans, Tropicalis, and Olivaceus.

I also believe P. Nats were found to make sclerotia but I have not experienced that personally and I’ve been gone for awhile so cannot confirm.

Was there anything else you need me to break down for you? Or do you understand now?

Damn had never heard of cyanescens making sclerotia, only maybe some pseudosclerotia but I just compared some prior plates to some cinctulus “blue pearls” pictures on here and had some very similar looking growths. I also had some ATL7 and Subtropicalis plates from way back that were sclerotia producing that I looked at and I honestly wouldnt be surprised if youre right. Hopefully they still fruit but definitely a twist I didnt expect, but all the more reason I post on here — for info like this. The more you know. Grazie.

These are definitely small just like Cincts…I never agreed on the term Pseudoscerotia. But I’m also not a stickler I just don’t understand how the only difference is size makes it pseudo?! Makes no sense to me anyway.

Anyway I was just pulling your coat to the fact that other Pan species do this also and to not be hard on yourself for having a Stoney culture.

Be easy. Hopefully you get a good fruiting culture.
