Sorry to hear that, man. I lost my older brother many years ago. We were very close. Been through a lot together. I called him my little big brother because he was much shorter than me. I think about him often even though it has been 18 years. His death took a piece of my with him. Our mom was never the same after. The first few years were really hard since we were all so close. To this day she calls me to make sure I'm ok if there is snow or bad thunderstorms. Sorry for your loss, man. Hugs.

That description of serving 18 fucking years for a nonviolent offense is a good reminder of why drug decriminalizing is a good thing. I can’t even begin to imagine. What a waste. I don’t know how all you folks function after all the trauma I read on here. I’m ready to just check out of this big dumb American society because my job is stupid, meaningless, and doesn’t pay fairly. I feel like if I went through the kind of stuff you guys have endured I’d be drunk in a gutter at best.

Like ldk said.  What you do with your pain is ultimately up to you. In my experience there are two byproducts of trauma: bitterness or compassion. 

I think one of the biggest game changing realizations for me was that it isn't all about me.  Poor me in my trauma. That that's vanity.

Committing yourself to helping other people is actually a life hack

I didn't feel like waiting for the agar to cool to 140 so I poured plates with it probably around 180 degrees. My fingertips will atone me for this sin. Forgive me o fingertips.

My Dad passed on his 76th birthday, March 11th this year. A main reason for getting my PhD was to make him proud; now I just hope to be half as good a man as he was for my own kids. It's been six months, but not a day goes by that I don't have to check myself from shutting down.

Sorry to hear that brother. My dad is in advanced stages of prostate cancer presently I will see him tomorrow for a surgery.  Life gets really real after 40

This.

I grew up with an authoritarian mother who was extremely abusive. When I reached my 30s, I volunteered for CASA (court appointed specialized advocates). They advocate for neglected and/or abused children in the system. Think of CPS but solely focusing on the child and not the family as a whole. I'd have to do my research, draft pleadings, and then stand up in front of a judge to make my recommendations. There were times I missed my college classes to show up for these children.

Oddly enough, I'm not really a fan of children and don't like to be around them. But if I've experienced a similar trauma and can understand it better than others because of that, why would I not do something to help others who are going through the same thing?
