What's up buddy? I was hoping you'd make your way in here. I've been doing well, working two easy part-time jobs, blissfully single, and finally the grumpy old man I was always destined to be. Hit 50 years old this month! :strokebeard2:

How you been, and what have you been up to? And in your experience, do you think I should just re-case these trays due to the overlay, or leave them be?

Update #8

Well, I got the second 80mm fan in the mail, and it died within 2 minutes after installing it. Thankfully I found Pheno's "Dreamer Tub" thread! After reading through his whole thread, I got some great tips on sensor placement and humidistat settings that have helped to eliminate the microclimate swings. I plugged the fogger bucket fan in so it runs 24/7, so only the ultrasonic is running off the humidistat. I also grabbed some plastic "baskets" to use as platforms to raise the trays up. Now there is 5 inches of space for fog to collect below the rim of the trays while the fogger is running, and the fan then blows it upward around the trays as it purges the fog from below. This has drastically reduced the excess condensation, without drying out the surface of the trays.

I did alter the fogger bucket by removing the flex hose, and upgraded to 2" pvc to allow more airflow out of the bucket. I moved the whole thing into the main part of my house where the climate is more consistent. I had forked the overlay to see if that helped with pinning, but it just came back thicker. I ended up scraping off the overlay, and re-casing the trays. It's been 2 days running the updated system, and I've got some clean myc coming up. It looks more like fuzzy growth than rubbery, so I'm hopeful it won't overlay on me again.

After reading Pheno's thread I started thinking differently about how to control it. He advised that you kind of ignore trying to overthink the RH controller, and just watch your surface conditions. So after stumbling around trying to find the right settings with this new perspective I landed on basically and ebb and flow style "fog and purge" process that I will forever more call the "FaP Tank" because it sounds naughty! I run the fogger just long enough for the fog to fill up the space below the trays and start spilling over the lips on to the casing layer. When the fogger shuts off, the fan blows fresh air from under the fog to thin it out and push it up to purge it from the tubs. As it thins you can see fresh air tendrils coming up between the trays and through the fog like smoke. This causes the fog to swirls a bit over each of the trays, creating individual microclimates for each tray. It's quite mesmerizing to watch I might add... The surface effects I'm seeing are that while the outside surfaces of the trays and their stands stay dry, the inside lips of the trays and the casing surface stay just moist enough to glisten in the light.

I have the humidistat calibrated to -5% to eliminate the alarm constantly going off, and have the sensor tip below the trays next to the pipe exhaust. I have the controller set to kick on at 85% (90% actual), and shut off at 91% (96% actual), and it spikes to 91.8% (96.8% actual). Currently the cycle is around 45 seconds on to around 8 minutes off, and the casing is still not drying out.

I started to copy your setup but ended up just buying two more humidity controllers for my north spore mycomister to just use interchangably on 3-4 boomr bins. Once I have 3-4 boomr bins going simultaneously I'm going to copy this but scale up the two tubs connected to the fogger bucket. At first I was thinking I would try to find some absolutely massive 120qt tubs I can fit 3 32q or two 54 quart tubs inside, but I'm rethinking that cause I don't want to risk contamination from one tub getting into the other two. I think what I'm going to end up doing is just scaling things up substantially from what I'm currently doing and doing 4 80 quart tubs at a time with the fogger bucket while I run four boomr bins off one or two mycomisters. I'll just split the fogger bucket four ways with smaller fittings. That thing probably has enough output to handle it I would think especially since it has two large sonic misters in it.

If you haven't already, I suggest you read through Pheno's Dreamer tub thread before you build a new system.

After almost a month of these blocks not fruiting, I'm suspecting the issue is the composted manure. My guess is that at 21% of the substrate, the manure is just too leached out to be viable for pans. I've got a batch of AIO half-pint jars ready to noc with agar culture that are 50/50 Verm/Composted manure to test, but I'll be getting some Black Kow tomorrow to compare with.

Great thread dude! Ehhhh it could be the manure, but pans definitely will fruit without manure at all. It'll just be a very pathetic and weak fruiting. Good step to try the black kow though. You see mojaves liquid nute Tek? Pretty sure that's how faht does his pans too. I don't really grow pans anymore but if I were too again, that's how I would do it.

I'll check that out later when I have time. I'm at my wits end with these first trays. I shut off the fog system and have just been using the tubs like unmodded tubs, spritzing several times per day. Still nothing... Makes me feel like a noob again. Best I can tell is it's either the manure, or the genetics. So the Black Kow should help me narrow that down.

Yeah dude they should pin by now, even in shitty conditions. Not saying your conditions are shit..b just generally speaking. Estero is pretty good, usually. I can't recall if you mentioned, but did you start the culture from MS yourself?

It was sold from the supplier as an isolate. I started off with grain master jars noc'd with the spore syringe. I selected the best master to G2G with, and before doing so took several individual grains to agar from the master. I have not tested the culture yet to see if it is actually an isolate. My intention was to just run it out for a while and clone later on. I guess it's possible that the isolate is just a bad one, but I'm betting it's the composted manure that is the main issue. I noc'd my AIO jars today with one agar jar, and am currently soaking grains to run another batch of masters from the agar jars I've got left.

Update #9

Well, holy shit! Technically I have fruited my first two Pan cyans.... Although they are the smallest non-aborted fully formed mushrooms that I ever fruited! :lmafo:

I noticed them on only one tray, when I was pulling them out to toss outside in the manure pile. I buried the blocks in one spot, and 7 pint jars of grain that had gone too long waiting for the trays to fruit. I pre-sifted a few gallons of the Black Kow I got today, and tossed the larger chunks on top of the failed blocks before burying. I threw a sprinkler hose on the spot and covered it back up with the pool cover I've been using as a tarp.

I don't expect anything to come from the outdoor spawning, but if it does then great! I'll update again with results from the AIO jars, but will start a 2.0 thread for the next batch with Black Kow.

So I was thinking how I could start easily pasteurizing substrates (instead of sterilizing) without having to add any equipment costs or build anything, then it dawned on me... I have this beast at work I can use! I got permission to use it from the boss today, so I've got 6 quarts of 50/25/25 Coir/Verm/Black Kow substrate split up in two 1/2 gallon jars running at 100% steam, at 160F for 4 hours overnight. I had to lean them over at an angle because the fan inside the unit kept blowing the foil lid covers off. The goal is to see how long before these test jars contam without any spawn added to them. If this works as it should, it'll be a game changer for my myco-work.

Thanks. I went to Walmart looking for stainless steel cookie racks, but the only ones they had were only around 1/2" tall. So I just meandered around until I found something as tall as I wanted. It coincidentally worked out perfect for the fog and purge cycle I was wanting to create in the totes. It fogs thick underneath, then thins out as it gets pushed up to the substrate surface level so it doesn't over-saturate anything.
