Germinating spores unconventionally (no agar)

Have spores but no agar..

just wondering if anyone has had any successful ventures in going from dirty spore print to fruits without using agar.

The only thing that comes to mind is that if your spores manage to germinate inside a PF-Tek jar despite the contamination, you could open it, pull out a colonized portion, and transfer it to a Pristine BRF Puck (or several) to try to get a cleaner print from there.

Or you could inoculate the Puck directly and try to transfer healthy mycelium to other plates.

If this is about the cakes you shared in that other post, you could make the most of them by trying to extract a piece of clean mycelium from deep inside them.

Maybe someone else knows a more practical solution...

Or you could use gelatin, but use a lot of gelatin because if you dont the mycelium will turn the gelatin liquedy (like a SSLC)

I know some OGs will say using gelatin is blasphemy but ive made it work for myself

Brf paste can work but is better saved to just confirm and isolate clean growth. Cleaning up a known dirty sample not only will be best accomplished with agar, slightly more advanced methods like sandwiching, trench, cabin, warm pour, antibiotics or a combination, may be needed depending on the type of contamination. The good news is agar is pretty easy to do. I could hit up an Asian supermarket and a grocery store and get everything I needed.

Eh, if the prints are dirty (they probably are) you'll just be growing contam

Try making a bunch of pf tek cakes like scemilope did, inoculate all of them, and keep the ones that look the cleanest

I've done it successfully w/ standard rice spawn to substrate, so it can be done.  It was DAMNED slow, though.  Managed to fruit fairly well, so my patience was rewarded.  It didn't give me lots of individual shrooms, but the ones it did give...well, let's just say they made me feel inadequate, lol.

Obviously nothing is better than agar. But if I absolutely had to, I'd use a brf puck.

Oh yeah, if it helps, I didn't do brown rice.  I think that specific one was either red cargo rice or black rice.  The extra nutes might've had a hand in my (eventual) success.  But, your mileage will vary and if you can do agar, then ya might as well.  Can't hurt nothin', at any rate.

its the cost of diminishing returns, when the procuring the agar becomes less hard than trying to do the process without it and wishing you had. it will likely be less good, and youll wish you had just got the agar. you can pregerminate spores in sterile water afaik.

For the record, I've also had stubborn spores germinate on brf when they refused to on agar. Brf is actually pretty antibacterial as well. Does fuck all for mold though, but neither does agar. You can definitely clean up spores on brf. It's just visually more difficult.

If I'm planning to grow outdoors, I would 100% take multispore to brf and skip agar.

There is a reason PF Tek was way ahead of its time.
