spores on wet perlite = contamination risk?
    #1788111 - 08/07/03 01:17 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

if spores dropped onto the wet perlite layer lining the bottom of the terrarium would it create a risk for contamination?

also...is there any way to collect spores that have floated on top of the caps?

there is always a contamination risk no matter what you do first of all, but people put cakes right on the perlite. just make sure when you mix some hydrogen peroxide in with the water to dampen the perlite.

collect spores on top of caps? doubt it, just take the cap off and take the spores from under it

I'm not sure, I've heard of others posting that their caps opened and puked spores everywhere and just let them keep fruiting. I don't think it's to much of a big deal. Just try an catch the spores to reuse'em. Ya dig?

I don't believe spores increase risk of contamination, either way. I don't think that they have any nutritional value for contams to feed off of, but I could be wrong. Any experts?

They could germinate, but fresh spores should be pretty strong. I don't think it's a big deal, as long as you're changing the perlite every now and then. Germinated spores' mycelium lasts for > 1 month on water agar, so I don't think it would just die; the spores have enough nutrition for the mycelium to survive for a while.

I don't know if H2O2 kills spores or just inhibits their germination.

No.  Actually, that's not quite right.  It could, theoretically, but the increase in risk is miniscule.  Don't sweat it.

I think it kills them, either before or just after they germinate. The spores or a few cells don't have enough of the enzyme that converts H2O2 to H2O + O2 to deal with the amounts they're running into, so they get poisoned by it.
