***OFFICIAL UK Liberty Cap (Ps. Semilanceata) thread 2026*** * 4
    #29642256 -

I guess I get to start the thread this year (again lol), after finding 30 of these little guys in a field in north Scotland. Elevation was about 30 metres.

Sorry I don't have a proper habitat shot, I didn't think to get one before picking.

It's really early to see the start of the season up here, usually the first ones come out at the very very end of August or early September, so it's quite exciting.

edit: also sorry for the low res pictures, shroomery wouldn't let me upload them unless I shrunk the file size down a bit as they were too big before.

Found over a hundred today when picking with a mate of mine. The season's already hit here pretty decently. I should post pics tomorrow.

Also, I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone else's finds this season!

Headed out to the hills today to scratch a few more Wainwright's off the list over the lakes .
Started finding Libs around 450m all the way upto 670m above sea level. Was a bit slow at first as I spent more time focusing on direction and wainwright's but after a few hours the numbers started adding up .

Covered 20km over 6hours hiking and climbing. Had to stop picking as I filled my box and still had to walk back to the car and drive 2h home in traffic. Might get back out on the weekend to knock off a few more Wainwright's and see if my luck continues.

I'm currently based in the Midlands of England but was wondering how different the timing of liberty cap season is in the Aberdeen area versus further south? I know it tends to be a bit earlier the further north you are due to temps. Thanks

I found over 400 in the lake district earlier today. All were found above 450m above sea level. A lot depends on the amount of rain you've had in your area over the last 2 weeks ( is the grass still dry and brown? ) and the night time temps . The best way to tell if they're out is go for a walkies and see what's happening 😉

Thanks for the response. I have a lot of experience picking locally myself but trying to help someone further afield. Seems way too hot where I am at sea level Midlands at the mo, but yeah, I guess it's a case of keeping an eye on temps and rain (and maybe this thread!)

Generally what it seems to me is that in the early season you tend to only really find them at higher alititudes. Watch out for humidity, night temps (specifically 8-11C) and even pressure (should be low rather than high.)

They don't necessarily need rain. Ime they do best with fog/mist, or overnight dew. But even just consistently high humidity could be enough.

Generally the north half of England seems to see the season a month behind the north of Scotland, and ours started a month ago so hopefully you'll see some soon. Also even travelling as little as a few kilometres can drastically change results. I'm finding hundreds just 3km away, but none in the usual spots here.

Also look for areas with high moisture retention, like the edges of a field along the treeline, or even around the lower edges of a small hill in the field if there is one where the water drains towards - this is very important in the beginning of the season.

Happy hunting and good luck!

Im in Shropshire and season hasn't quite hit yet. I find here as soon as it drops to no higher than 15 in the day you will find them. I might be trekking the hills Newtown way considering recent weather,  if anybody Mid Wales can report their luck.

Love seeing the photos. I will try to remember to post finds and habitat shots, GL all
