liberty caps are found in pastures in New York State but they do not grow in manure.

However about twenty-five or so of the 188 species of mushrooms with psilocybine in them do grow from manure and P. cubensis and Copelandia mushrooms can be found in Texas.

Hi ZMhacker,

here is a list of the known species in New York State taken from my article in TRP magazine. The whole US/Canada list is in the General Forum section of this website.

New York State
Conocybe cyanopus (Atk.) K?hn.
Gymnopilus liquiritae
Gymnopilus luteofolius (Peck) Singer
Gymnopilus luteus
Gymnopilus spectabilis
Gymnopilus validipes (Peck) Hesler.
Panaeolus fimicola
Panaeolus papillionaceus (Bull. :Fr.) Quel.
Panaeolus subbalteatus
Psilocybe caerulipes (Peck) Sacc.
Psilocybe semilanceata (Fr. :Secr.) Kummer.
Psilocybe silvatica (Peck) Singer & Smith.

OOUt of these species, three are common and imposrtant.

The liberty cap,(P. semilanceata) grows in pastures in the fall in manured ground around the roots of sedge and other wild grasses in meadows.

Psilocybe caerulipes grows along the east coast from the south to NEw York.

And Panaeolus subbalteatus is a haycompost species common on the east coast in rotted haystacks and compost heaps at riding stables and racetracks.
