Full sun for me, even from seed. Its 90 degrees out right now with drenching humidity, just brutal!

Not even phased :sunny:

I'm planning for mine to eventually go outside with all my other cacti but the seeds I've all started indoors in Tupperware and under the light of an aerogarden.

I've had 2 flowers and a third on the way, hopefully I pollenated it correctly. I'm waiting for mine to fruit which I hear can take a month or more. If I get any seeds I'll let you know but I don't have any at the moment.

We're not allowed to recommend anyone that's not a shroomery sponsor/vendor>>https://www.shroomery.org/sponsors.php

But the vendors are slim these days and I think only Zamnesia carry seeds. Check them out, there may be others. Shroomery sponsors are trusted and tested. As safe as it gets and it  also supports the people that support the website.

Otherwise there is sellers out there on socials and also other groups on there. I'd say join those and keep an eye on the people that sell in there.

Most people in the cactus community are good people. Make a small purchase and see how that goes. If all is well then buy more. Always do some research before buying from people or companies. Shouldn't be too hard.

My loph isn't doing the best ATM.

I noticed it seemed wrinkly and looked soft. It was due for a watering so I soaked it for 20ish minutes. I checked on it three days later and the soil was dry but it didn't look any better.

I also noticed some blotches.

Fearing root rot I unplanted it. This is what it looks like after sitting in a paper towel for 48 hours:

For "commercial cactus soil" I'm getting a mixture off of Amazon with these ingredients:

I'm having issues finding lava rock. Is it essential to the soil mix or just for extra drainage?

Can I get away with using 1 part Amazon stuff with 2 parts perlite?

1 part soil and 2 parts Perlite will work. It's basically what I use.

Alternatives for lava rock(scoria as we call it in Australia) can be: Akadama, Pumice stone, Hydroponic clay balls.

All of them should be around 2-5mm in size to mix soil with. Take note of the size you're purchasing.

You can also use coarse sand. But make sure it's coarse sand and wash it before you make a soil mix. Washing removes the fine particles. If you use the incorrect sand then your soil will compact. You don't want that.

Your plant looks fine really.

It's hard to advise you further as I don't know how long you've had this plant, how long it was potted for and what time of year it is in your part of the world, Spring, Winter etc....?

It doesn't appear to have any fine roots. That's why it probably hasn't taken in any water and why it's wrinkled a little bit. Unless it's been in full sun. That can cause shriveling too.

That photo of the different soil amendments is nice
I love the fine pumice stone.
:awejeez:
I was gonna say yeah what about washed sand? It can become compact and hard
for sure, I think it happens to me when I add too much into the mix.

I've not heard of it until now. It's not something I think that's in use down here.

It might be something you could use as a top dressing. Again, no experience with it.

Wedgie said:

It depends on the type of washed sand and you should always rinse it more when you get it home. This will remove the finer particles that are still present and will help prevent compaction. You'll be surprised at how much washes away. Use a bucket. Put sand in. Fill bucket with water. Stir it all up so it's muddy. Let the heavier coarser sand to settle and pour off the muddy looking water containing the fines. Repeat until clear.

Or use a sieve with like a 2-3mm screen.

You saying it compacts is telling me it's the wrong sand.

Coarse sand is called this because the edges are irregular and coarse. Even if you pour water over it it will never compact enough for water to not get through easily. The irregular and coarse edges form gaps that still allow the water through. It's always gritty, even when totally waterlogged.

Fine sands will be less coarse, have more regular edges and will compact tightly together once water is poured through it. Preventing any gaps for water to get through. It's not gritty and is smooth and viscid in the hand when totally waterlogged.

Not all sands are the same and coarse sand is not washed sand.

I got the plant at the end of June. It was planted in the soil/rock/sand/peat mix it came with.

Do I need to do anything with the exterior damage? I ordered some sulfur powder if it will help.

For now, I just have it under a 4-headed LED full spectrum seedling light. I plan to get something more powerful, but I'm going to build a lighted shelf for loph seedlings/plants and want to plan that out before I buy anything.

@PuffM4gicDr4gon - I think you have the same caespitosa clone I do...

It does get more soft and wrinkly than other lophs between watering. It also gets weird grey flecking and blotches on it. I'm not really sure what it is, but it still seems to be growing well and put out it's first flower since I've had it this year.

@Moonlit - I put a tiny bit of greensand (glauconite) in my rock dust mix for loph soil mix. Mostly just because I have it, but it's a good slow release Fe, K, and silica source.

I dry screen the coarse sand I get through a wire colander into a bucket to get the smaller particles out, which is a lot usually. I sprinkle those into the compost pile and around garden beds for worms to use as grit...or that's my idea/hope for what happens to it anyways. What looks like the very coarse sand example picture is what stays and gets used for my desert plant soils.

I grow my lophs inside for multiple reasons, and adding heat mats that are timed with the lights has been a level up for growing them indoors for me. I used to do that because it helps with seed germination, but noticed the older ones really like it too, so now they all have that.

They make heat mats that daisy chain now, so my 4 heat mats just use one plug, which is awesome.

Sir... this is a cactus thread.

It's a mushroom you're looking for, so you would probably get better results asking in the mushroom forums somewhere. It's not likely that someone here would know where to order them, but they do sound interesting. Good luck.

I'd just pot it back up and treat as normal. Don't water it for a couple of weeks, allow broken roots to heal and callus. Give some water and observe it for new growth at the tip and ribs. It's got no rot that I can see.

It still needs to establish it's roots. It might be shriveling due to it needing water or it could be it's new growing conditions.

If it's not warm enough then it won't be actively growing now anyway. Even inside.

It definitely cooled down a lot the week I noticed my 'issues' started. We're down to 20c in the day and 12c at night, and my room is about the same.

The soil was mostly dry a couple days after a soaking, so that mix was draining ok. Just some deep compacted areas were still damp.

I want to make a shelf/light/heat mat system for indoor growing. I'd like it to be for loph plants and seedlings as well as Orchid Flasks and Plants.

Something like this:

Lophs and Orchids both use fast draining substrates (although different compositions)

Mushrooms and Orchids require sterile conditions to start and use a lot of the same equipment.

I like the idea of the three hobbies being similar enough that they tend to share skills and equipment.

@puff, I think your plant looks good for now too.  do you have to wait long for material to re-pot ?..

..i like the rack, i have a shorter version with cheap led strip tied to the above rack,  it has been good for winter..

this was my first winter using the led for them.  I still wasn't watering and im not certain the light was necessary, if not counter productive ?

plants, the condiment cup there will be the next repotting.  I think i want to regraft that pup and scion to a larger trichocereus next.

I give mine some light as well during winter/hibernation. Not sure either
if it makes any difference.

@karode ahh yes, amazing!!!
You gotta love other people's styles, it's sorta like art. Minus AI nonsense.

I remember buying a few 99cent store cacti, nice specimens, Myrtrillocactus
and even Copiapoa at one point. ALL just planted in pure sand.
Random, chalky grey sand. I remember thinking "umm...."
They obviously needed transplanting.
Mammillaria Sp. sand cake 🎂

That's another thing not mentioned here. DO be careful with that stuff.
Especially perlite. Don't breath it in please. Seriously.
⚠️⚠️⚠️
That pumice sand-dust is cool but can't be good to be breath any of it in.
Wear gloves too. I feel like its unnecessary to say but ya know

When it comes to sand and such it's awesome. Sorta depends on the species too
though. Some like far more drainage.
A few species survive on just nothing but pumice stone and water/food I've seen. :stoned:

People these days still do that sand thing. Again I guess it's just
their growing "Style". Me wanting to "correct" that is sorta like
telling an artist to stop painting the way they do.

WHY do people just plant them in pure sand my friend???
I cant figure that out.

Even though it still works, receiving a sand-only planted cactus is wild lol
omg it's like what the heck, why is this person's cactus so heavy, why so much sand and rocks?
weighs like half a pound and it fits in your palm  freakin' A.

PS please watch out for the dust from soil amendments. Wear a mask if needed.

Growing under lights in a shelf type system is a good way to get a collection going.

Wetting things down can mitigate dust particles. It's why I use water to wash my sand. Silica in your lungs is not great.

You can get grafted Peyote to flower under 1 year too as you can control the temperature and can avoid the dormant period. We ran grafting competitions in this forum years ago.

Mostly_Harmless got one to flower from seed in under a year from memory.
