It won't just shrivel up and die, since it's on a cutting? Neat. Hopefully it'll bloom nicely. I had assumed it was just a fat, fuzzy areole or something. Thanks for all the help, you guys.

So i have these three babies None are rooted and two of them are really skinny and flimsy due to me leaving them on my shelf during the winter. Stupid me, The other one with the actual head is variegated at the top it's like a deep white (pretty cool) and well i'm worried about rooting the two little guys without the tops. Any tips or advice?

They're skinny due to a little bit of dehydration. This is not a big deal and IME actually causes them to root faster as they're a little more desperate for water.
The one that you mentioned is variegated isn't actually variegated but etiolated. It started stretching for lack of light and that's what causes the tissue to lighten up, lack of chlorophyll.
They root just fine with or without growing tips, just give it time. After 3 weeks or so gently lift up on them or dig around and lift them from the bottom to check for roots.

are the folds on the top portion of a trichocereus the beginings of a polycephalic cactus? or.. are there ways to tell whether your cactus will branch out?

This is an awesome thread! Some of you guys have amazing trichocereus collections. I have a question for you guys. What causes trichocereus to flower? Temperature? light cycle? Size? Age? I have a few nice sized trichs and I am wondering if I will see some flowers soon.
