Compared to where I live, you guys have a much milder and wetter climate, similar to British Columbia. We usually get at least 3 feet of snow, which actually helps protect the mycelium from the extreme −40°C winters that are normal in my region of Canada. I’m not sure if Psilocybe azurescens would survive here, since as far as I understand it prefers sandy soil with mainly hardwood debris. Anyway, I don’t have azurescens culture on hand, and it seems to be quite.
Will be good to see from you photos of nice fruits this fall 😎

My Azure patch did not survive an Edmonton winter. A small area showed mycelium and then immediately got taken over by trich.


This year I'm doing an outdoors tub and I think I'm going to rig up some kind of small water pump to a timer and trickle in a bit of water once a week and see if I can keep it alive in my basement until next spring

Oh! We’ve got similar conditions 😅 What do you think about Psilocybe cyanescens—do you think they could survive cold winters under snow? It seems like they might do well in low-lying, semi-flooded areas where brewers leave a lot of hardwood debris

Faht,
I did the aerial hyphae transfer you helped explain to me a couple weeks ago. On 6/22 I did the transfers. 5 plates, 2 ttbvi and 3 atl7, and I’m not seeing anything at all yet. I did get barely visible strands that may not have come off with my forward push, but I’m positive a couple did. Is it time to try again? Or should I keep waiting? I know you said it can take a while, but I feel like I should see SOMETHING. It’s LME 7.5g to 10g agar 500ml h20. Have great growth on all the other transfers to this batch of agar. I’m pretty sure my technique somehow fucked it up. Picture of the plates, you can see where i pushed in the scalpel. i only pushed the tip through, I didn’t go very deep at all.




I have a couple good looking grain spawn from the one real clean plate I had, but would love to clean up these others. I have all the stuff to zip lock with the CV+ with worm castings (I think that’s what it’s called) so thank you so much for letting me attend to copy your grow!

It’s a tricky thing to do.  When you get barely visible strands, they pretty much compress into non-visible strands when anything touches them like agar.  They tend to get pretty stuck on the tip.  If you’re not seeing recovery within a few days, it wasn’t successful.  I have a whole stack of unsuccessful plates and I look pretty closely all around the tip when I think it’s come off and still fail. 

My suggestion would be to back away from the very leading edge a little bit and do a sweep with the hook off the very top of the myc and get a decent tuft and play with getting that off the tip.  It’ll still help clean up the culture and give you practice with doing aerial transfers.

You really want the tip to dig into the agar as little as possible.. if it’s sweeping through the myc, it’s gonna pick up anything dirty too.  It’s tricky and a work in progress for myself too.  There’s some bacteria that idek if I can fully get away from using even the aerial transfers.  There’s a point where I’m saying to myself, “ok, this is probably as clean as I’m going to get it, I need to send it and then clone” because I have an easier time getting clones clean than ms

I’m glad I’m not just driving a struggle bus alone. I definitely noticed as soon as something touched the myc it bunched up and men in blacked it’s way to another planet. I will do some more. It is fun learning new ways to do things. Thanks for the help! I will try again today or tomorrow.

I have a B+ that has a super stubborn bacterial issue too, but will still fruit two flushes, so I had to do the same and just clone from fruit, but it looks much better now!

So this a good example of why you want to dig the scalpel tip into the agar as little as possible or at all if it can be helped (which is very difficult)

So, on this plate, I did a first attempt and didn’t think it was successful so I took another aerial tuft and did one next to the first attempt.. (it wasn’t successful so, I’m glad I did)


In this pic, you can see the cuts in the agar to the left of the successful one


So there was obv something left on the agar from the scalpel tip that’s impeding the new growth.. its basically invisible.. doesn’t appear to be anything growing there but the myc around it is starting to grow down into the agar.  These bacteria are so stealthy.


With a transfer that, afterwards, I’m like, “that’s gonna be good” is when I drag the ends of the tuft along the top of the agar to the point where I think it’s about to very easily come off the tip with just a little more dragging (I’m starting to do this part off to the side on the plate) and I move that hanging piece towards the center of the plate and drag it a little and it comes off. The scalpel tip never touches the agar.  Those have been the cleanest but it works out like very fuckin rarely :lol:

I feel like a surgeon sometimes because I have the plate in my left hand, the scalpel in my right and the pinkies from both fingers are touching to stabilize the scalpel hand with my right elbow against my side to further stabilize and scalpel is resting on the plate edge and I’m making such small movements to make sure I got only the very top/rounded edge of myc.

And even now, I don’t think that above plate is clean (the successful transfer).  I’m about to do another leading edge pull.  But plates like this are where I’m saying, “this is probably as good as it’s going to get” and I’ll take punches from the leading edge where I just get the smallest amount of myc on the punch that I can muster to put into the grain jar.

Sup guys I have this mini 16 qt ez-dial monotub going.  The lid is also a bit loose so theres extra fae



Its looking decent so far. I would mist with a fine mister to keep small beads of water on the surface.

It just started to pin now and the mycelium seems to absorb the water and doesnt want to bead anymore.

Any advice on how I should proceed at this crucial point? I hear misting on pans pin will make them abort easily.
Should I just mist the walls and lid and thats it leave it be?

I have a reptile fogger also but I would have to manually fog the tub a few times per day, not sure if its worth it or not

I usually switch to side watering or watering the walls at that point.

Assuming you feel it needs water, sometimes I just let it ride too.

Some cultures will do fine with direct misting though.  But generally I rehydrate the casinig between flushes if I'm not misting with a fogger.

Any tips to prepare some millet? First time I soaked them overnight then simmered them and they just all exploded.

2nd time I just soaked them 18 hours, then dried them and pc. But they seem too dry this time

I wish I could help but I never did figure out how to get them to run well on millet.



Either Oregon or Liquid Amber coming up.  I didn't feel like dealing with my label maker.

Have you tried Fooman's WBS tek? It's an oldie, but a goodie. Should work for millet.

So done a little research on copelandia apparently it's classified as an dung lover though they actually use the decomposed plant fibers in the dung supposedly? And theoretically they would do better on a plant matter compost than dung. My question is anyone attempt growing these with compost as a casing or the substrate bulk?

It’s not only about dung. The bacterial community associated with the substrate can play an important role in the development and fruiting of Panaeolus

Think if I introduced some dung that's decomposing from bacteria n the sun to a compost pile the healthy bacteria can thrive or would it die
