CAKE WARS is all about growing mushrooms using PF Tek and it's minor variations.

CAKE WARS III is an an event not to be missed! STARTS SEPT 1, 2026 AND RUNS THROUGH DEC 15, 2026. Please join in on the fun!

Here are two important reference links to our most recent prior CAKE WARS:

CAKE WARS I (Dec 1, 2025 - Apr 11, 2026)
CAKE WARS II (Apr 15, 2026 to Jun 30, 2026)


Half-pint (250mL) wide mouth jars are strongly recommended for speed, and one can always use jars of their own choosing.

RULES OF WAR

Updated August 30, 2026

START DATE: September 1, 2026
END DATE: December 15, 2026

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Make an "i'm in" post in this thread. That's all that is needed to get started, and you will be counted as a willing participant from that date forward. If you have already done that in some way, then there is no need to repeat it.

RULES

BASIC OUTLINE OF COMPETITION
  • At the end of the day, this is a mushroom beauty contest, and the winner will be selected by poll-style voting by all entrants.
  • Voting will begin at 12:01am (CDT/CST USA) on December 16, 2026 and will end at 11:59pm (CDT/CST USA) on December 20, 2026. Highest number of votes wins. Runoff votes may be necessary if first round voting does not show a clear winner.
  • There will be only one CAKE WARS III Champion chosen. This person gets whatever the big prize will be, to be announced.
  • Depending on entries, there may be multiple subclasses declared and also subclass winners decided by additional participant voting. Subclass winners will also win special prizes, to be announced.
  • All participants will receive participation prizes, to be announced.
  • Participants may donate items for prizes; PM flapping_bird to arrange this.


REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRIES
  • ***IMPORTANT*** An ENTRY is a posted PHOTO of your final fruited cake. The photo must include the words CAKE WARS III in or on the photo. That's it, and this is 100% non-negotiable: skip the words in or on the pic and the entry is disqualified. ***IMPORTANT***
  • Entries will be accepted until 5pm (CDT/CST USA) on December 15, 2026.
  • Entries must reflect the entrant's own current work.
  • Grow as many cakes as you wish, but only one can be entered for each vote. Example: grow 4 cakes of 4 varieties -> choose one for the CAKE WARS III Champion vote
  • Entries must be fruited in PF-style cake-form, starting out as inoculated substrate in a jar. What happens after birthing from the jars is up to the grower.
  • Use any substrate formulation that you want to use
  • Inoculate your cakes using any method that you want to use
  • Fruit your cakes using any method that you want to use


SUBCLASSES OF COMPETITION REQUIRE AT LEAST 2 ENTRIES IN THE SUBCLASS. We'll figure this out as we go, based on what folks choose to grow. If only one person grows ochras, that's not a subclasss, but if two grow ochras that make it to fruiting, that's a subclass.

I've been preparing for this, to improve my entry from CW I.
I will have both wide and tall jars with spores from a print I grew and homemade flour from specially selected Brown Rice.
I'll be ready for battle whenever the first shots are fired.

You bet your ass I am in for this. Never done PF before, but was inspired to make some half pints based on splittinghairs' thread. One of them is almost fully colonized, so hopefully my first cake won't be on the battlefield.

And yup. lol. Wanted to not send my boot recruits out to the slaughter.  I realize now Yeti will not be a good strain for a competitive piece
