Does this look ready to move to my monotub?
    #29602530 -

Hi guys, this is my first post and first time growing! I inoculated my bag on 4/21 with B+ culture and was wondering if this looks ready to move to a monotub? From what I've read or watched Ive seen a few people mention that once its fully colonized to let it sit another week before making the move so they can settle in, what your thoughts or advice?

Welcome to the Shroomery, happy to see you here :hatsoff:

I like to give my bags and jars a final shake before spawning, two reasons for that. One is to make sure all grains are colonized and the second is for seeing how fast they recover.

If you don't see any uncolonized grains you don't need to wait until it is 100% colonized again, but give it a couple of days to make sure it recovers.

So with that big bag you can either throw all your eggs in one tub, or you can split it up into several shoeboxes, bag looks good from here

Thank you for the great insight.

When you say "recover" is that when the mycelium solidifies into a block again after you break it up? I do see some grain left so I can shake it up one more time I think.

never thought about splitting it up like that, thats a good idea i may do that while i try to get a feel for this.

By recover I mean that after a shake the grains will look almost a little wet and the mycelium will not be fluffy anymore. As it recovers you should be able to see it starting to fluff back up. You want to see it within 48 hours or so.

If it was 100% colonized you don't need to wait for it to completely solidify again. The reason I do a final shake is to check for bacteria. Every time we break&shake we are distributing whatever is in the jar/bag, hopefully nothing other then grains and our mycelium of choice.

If there is a bacterial contamination it will also spread by the break&shake, and the mycelium will recover poor and slow or not recover at all. Again you dont need to wait until it is fully solidified if it where 100%, just wait long enough for you to time how long it takes to start bouncing back.

And yeah, the picture doesn't really tell how much spawn you got, but if it's more then 1,5L you can split it up between smaller tubs and or shoeboxes and even try different spawn to substrate ratios if you want, like you said, to get a feel for how the process works :strokebeard:

Edit: Didn't have any pictures of what I tried to explain, but I just shook some jars so I'll take some pictures now, when they start to recover I'll post the pictures here to show you what I mean :awesomenod:

That is extremely helpful, I had no idea you could check for contam by shaking and seeing how well the spawn recovers.

Question: do you expect the recovering spawn to eventually get all the way as dense as OP's pic / before it was shaken? I know it can be sent sooner, but is it ever worth waiting?

I do pint jars in twos for each shoebox. Had two pints going recently, both looked very densely colonized, but one had a couple straggler grains, so I gave it a BNS just to be safe. Didn't shake the one at 100%. Shaken jar bounced back okaaaaay, but after 4 or 5 days was still nowhere as densely white as it was before. Still fully colonized though, no open grain spots.

They were both headed to the same shoebox, so I spawned them to separate sides with a wall of plain coir separating them. They've colonized and pinned pretty much identically in terms of speed, coverage, etc, so if the shaken one was fighting something, it wasn't very serious.

So it seems like "technically recovered but not as strong as OPs pic" is fine, yea?

Shoebox w both sides after a few days.

Here's two jars. First one was fully colonized when it was shaken and tested for recovery.

From left to right: 12 hours, 24 hours and 48 hours.

Second one was at around 85% colonized when it was shaken and tested for recovery.

Left to right: 12 hours, 24 hours and 48 hours.

With enough time it should get just as dense, but the only time I let them go that long is if I don't have the space or tub to spawn them. If you look at the first jar you can see it's fully recovered, but quite faint for cubensis, I think this is because the grains was already colonized and are only recovering and not jumping onto uncolonized grains. I would have no worries about spawning the jar right now.

In the second picture you see more dense growth because the mycelium is jumping over to uncolonized grain, or that is my assumption anyway :muppet:

It has been about a week since I shook it up and its not more white but it has turned back into a hard block so im guessing that is a good sign?

Also side note, idk if this should be a separate post but do you guys think this bag is cooked? Or is there still a chance?

The bottom of the bag had some mushy grain and i dont see any mycelium after inoculating 2 weeks ago. The bags also been like full of air a couple times i checked it.

Is using jars a safer way to guarantee growth? Ive been doing bags because its just easy to buy and inject.

Post a picture of the bag you think is ready to send.

For the balloon bag, might be the yeastie boys fermenting and filling your bag with CO2 :punkband:

Bags or jars, prepping and sterilizing your own grain is the only way to have control, same goes for inoculation, get into agar and get full control over the process

I guess i will just keep them going and see if anything happens?

I want to do the deep dive into the agar thing but it was pretty complicated when i looked at it, id need to really sit down and do deep dive. Sounds worth it though, I guess eventually you can be completely self reliant by cloning and keeping your own culture indefinitely is that right?

Agar isn't really difficult. If you can make jello then you can make up agar plates.

Well if the bags keeps inflating by themselves they're probably gone, yeast is a common contamination.

I know how you feel, agar felt overwhelming when I first looked into it as well. But as wowimflabbergasted says it isn't really that hard.

You will need some sterile petri dishes, preferably a media bottle, agar agar powder and some light dry malt extract.

And yes, with agar you can take clones and put agar in stasis to keep in cryovials or media bottles. I actually just revived my oldest cryovial, it has been sitting in a 5ml PP5 container in room temperature for 1,5 years.

Absolutely, if you get a pressure cooker you can do agar and make grain jars at will. Just need a still air box to work in.

Hi y'all have an update on that bag, I moved it to monotub and its been getting mycelium growing but im a little concerned if I put too much top layer of coco coir. You can see tiny mushrooms on the sides of the tub, im guessing that means they are popping up in the middle as well? Is this ok or sign of something off?

That is a thick top layer indeed, but when they start fruiting before full colonization it's most likely a contamination and the mycelium is trying to fruit and sporulate before the contamination kills it off :uhoh:

Nothing to do then let it ride in my opinion.

Update they are growing along the sides I hope that's okay but at least I've never seen them grow so that's a good sign

Liners tend to really help w/ side pinning, they stick to the cake and help prevent a micro climate from forming. I also REALLY pack down / compress the sides.
