Ready to case?
    #503654 - 12/28/01 11:48 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone - is this jar ready to case? Also seeing this jar is way ahead of the rest, is approx 80g of rye grain (expanded after cooking with 85ml of water to about 275ml of the jar) enough for a casing - or should I wait for another jar? Also, seeing this is my first time casing what do you all recommend I use? Can I just use straight verm or would I be better off with coco fibre? Also if I use straight verm or coco fibre do I need to add any lime to change the ph or is the ph fine as long as there's no peat moss? Cheers! :)

all depends on the size of your casing tray, just make sure there's 2 1/2 inches of a substrate layer and then a 1/2 inch top casing layer

and yes, lime is a very good idea, you can go to a true value hardware store and buy hyrdated limestone, that's the best, although hydrated lime powder also works. I'd never use a str8 verm casing, there's no nutrients in verm, use at least a 50/50 casing layer, I use 75/25 peat to verm and that seems to work a lot better... mix up the peat and verm first, then add 1 part lime to 4 parts 75/25 mix. the 75/25 is more prone to contams, so just make sure your area is as clean as possible. just try 1/4-1/2 inch casing layer and you're ready to go

HI
case your jar in a small plastic tray
1 to 2 cms of wet verm on botom, 1 cm of wet (bit less than in
bottom) on top of spawn
Put back in incubator for 3-4 days
Spray the top layer everiday with mix h2o/h2o2.
After that if mycellium didnt poke throught the verm layer,
take a clean fork, sterilize with 90?+ ethanol and gently
remove most of the top verm layer to the mycellium.
Just let a layer deep of 2 or 3 pieces" of verm.
If you see that it has not still well recovered (if mycellium is not
"one big block"), let sit for 2-days.
If it has recovered put in fruiting chamber, mist twice a day and fan until
you see pins.(4-15 days, depends on LOTS of factors....)
Stop misting but keep fanning.
Verm only works well and is quite easy to use for first time
(no ph balancing, etc...)
I use to case one 25 cl jars (millet+rye+brown rice+verm)
cut in three (or crumbled) in single litte plastic tray(7 cm
width, 25 cm length and 10 cm deep) with great success.

But as you used plain rye, you could try to spawn some bulk
substrate like dung or straw to get serious flushes but it may
be wise to keep this project for at least your second jar :)

Hope that helped an best luck

and also a lot less of a chance of growing big healthy shrooms!!!!!!

your yields are cut back drastically, if you wanna use straight verm go right ahead, i'm just pointing out the facts, straight verm is a shitty casing layer that won't get you half the results 50/50 + or Coco Coir would.

are you really sure you want to do that JJ? try looking at the pictures forum, look at the casings Anno grows, or anyone else for that matter, no one uses straight verm, why? because it sucks! there's no nutrients whatsoever. you don't yield shit, (you'd yield more off of a regular cake) even if you are a first timer, making a 50/50 casing is the easiest thing in the world. just mix equal amounts together and add the water, then throw in the microwave for 10 minutes.

if you wanna go and try the straight verm then go right ahead, i'm just trying to help you and let you know what works a lot better.

Agree with you Snobrdr311, straight verm is not the best
casing layer at all but it is a good one for beginner cause it
doesn't need much preparation.
But as you said 50/50 is not difficult to make either.
First time i cased, i used 50/50 and fucked all up because
i didn't prepare the mix well (too wet and didnt check ph).
Mycellium never went throught it and never fruited :((
I then tried straight verm, and mad'em fruit. After 2 successful little casings, i tried 50/50 again and it worked.
(and way better)
I think thats because first time i didnt realize well enought
how should a good casing be(mostly moisture and ph).
I found using straight verm easier and it helped me
understand the process.
That's my experience.....

Alright well I didn't do 50/50 either.. I did straight peat moss with lotsa baking soda to ph balance.. hopefully that'll work.. if not it don't matter got a few more jars almost ready :) I'll post pics if successful.

getting proper moisture is so simple though, all you have to do is add water, then take the casing mix and swueeze it in your hand until no more water comes out, then apply it on top of the substrate. somthing a 1st grader could do :)

Well I think I made the peat moss too moist.. o well heh anyhow I removed a large portion of it and this is how it currently looks. There's a layer of peat moss on the bottom too (I probably shouldn't have done that but hey we'll see what happens). This is the 2nd day after casing.

Woooh
Did you put a hamburger in there dude??

And about the moisture... if you look a bit up this thread you see:
"getting proper moisture is so simple though, all you have to do is add water, then take the casing mix and swueeze it in your hand until no more water comes out, then apply it on top of the substrate. somthing a 1st grader could do :) "

That looks wierd man. Too much moist. Looks like it is all dead. And what did you say you put in there to raise Ph? Is that allright??

zilch

Unfortunately I read that *after* I cased hehe.
It's not dead - there's a lot of rhizomorphic growth visible on the sides of the container so it's very much alive.. I used baking soda.. it's basic.. should work.. lol :)

The idea is to get a layer, not sprinkled peat moss. Anyway, cover the rye PROPERLY with an half inch top layer, moistened not swampy.

Peace,
MAIA

I had a layer like I said heh.. I took it off to let the mycelium recover from excess water. I'll add a layer again tomorrow. Thanks!
