Difference between Casing ingredients?
    #605342 - 04/11/02 11:40 AM (23 years, 2 months ago)

I read alot about different casings. What is the difference between a casing consisting of perlite and potting soil, and or bird seed and hay and all that jazz? Thanks.

hehe
Well I hate to say this, but you really need to read some more information...The FAQ is pretty easy to read and understand.

First off, theres the substrate, in which the fungus grows on. It has nutrients for which it lives. Substrates are: Verm/Brown rice flour for beginners. You dont need a pressure cooker to sterilize. A grain spawn, another type of substrate with a nutrient base is Rye, and birdseed(millet based). These, you must sterlize with a pc before innoculation.

As for casing, the casing does not have nutrients, but adds as a buffer between the enviornment and the substrate. It acts as a water resivor, and a protective sheild from contaminant spores. Spores will land on it, but not do anything because there is no nutrients. The fugus from beneath, in the substrate (with the nutrients) will still grow through it to produce fruits.

Perlite is used for increasing humidity in your terrarium. Its placed on the bottom of the terr, wet, and it keeps your humidity high and stable.

Straw is used as a bulk substrate that is spawned with your grain. This colonizes and creates a big substrate, in which you can produce a lot of mushrooms from. You then case this, like you would your brf cakes or grain.

Hope that helps. I understand how its very confusing in the beginning.
