Basically the contestants do most of the work. You just need to make the link to the original "I'm in" post for each person and tally the votes. Contestants are responsible for upkeep of their first "I'm in" post.
Then voters can see that people didn't update for a specific month so they are not eligible.
I'm lagm(let's all grow mushrooms) we had our original post where we listed what we were growing for that contest. When we had an update we listed the date and posted pics to that 1 post.
This is my post in the last lagm thread I took part in. If you scroll down my post you'll see how it's dated with updates. You can go to the first page to see how it was linked. Sorry I deleted most of the pictures cause it's been a few years.

Could you do a post like this, and include a poll in the post for the vote? Seems like if you had every picture, with a poll at the end, voting would be streamlined quite a bit. No idea if it works that way, but maybe something like that?

Alright…..new month, new round. Trying to implement some improvements based on feedback.

Tweaked set of rules (feedback on these requested) :

1. to participate, drop a post stating “I’m in”.
2. One’s “I’m in” post will forever be the location for ALL of your month-to-month entries going forward. Each entry must be labeled with the month you entered it.
3. One can post their entry pic now or later, but to make it onto the ballot for voting, it **must** be in place no later than the 20th of the month.
4. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. For June, this is June 26, 2025.
5. Results will be announced on the first of the following month. (abandoned these changes after discussion below)

How do these feel/sound? Changes needed? I haven’t yet added these to the rules post (post #2 in this thread).

@mycdrop, I think I can make your suggestion work, will give it a shot.

I did some testing and now know that I cannot show the actual picture in a poll item, but I can list usernames, so voting by poll should/would be workable, except there’s no good way for someone to vote more than once for any one entry, so there’s that…dunno if that really matters to anyone though?

IMO posting a picture should count as entry, with the "I'm in" as a placeholder if you just want to reserve a spot for later? IMO anybody who posts a photo in a thread titled photo contest is implicitly agreeing to enter.

Do I replace my old photo each month? Add it to the top? The bottom? I feel like this risks becoming confusing. What if I'm out one month but then come back in? Do I edit my original post or make a new one? If this becomes a long running event will you have to chase down photos from OGs spread across 60+ pages?

100000x this, if it's possible. I like the idea of each month getting its own thread. People just post one photo anywhere in the thread, and then when voting opens, submissions close, and the first post can get edited to be a pile of photos with usernames, and the poll widget at the end. They do it like this over in hunting & ID and it seems to work.

They have a separate voting booth thread which feels kinda superfluous. IMO a title change adding "NOW VOTING: July 2026 photo contest" or whatever would be plenty. It can start like "ENTER NOW:" and end like "STRAWBOY WINS:" for a lil glory.

One vote per person seems totally okay IMO, and a great tradeoff if it makes the poll widget work. Would certainly save you some inbox overload and manual tallying.

hrmmmm…thanks, Rasmodious. So just make it to be: post a pic during the month as one’s entry (nothing else needed), submissions close when voting starts, and a poll-style picture summary ballot for automated voting?

Sounds a lot easier….other input from anyone?

How about adding themes like "Novelty grows" or "most aesthetic" or even species etc. It'd make things more fun and easier to vote for the best contribution. Without a theme it's basically just a battle Royale and I've seen this type of contest crash hard before due to unhappy people saying "but mine was better..." According to his/her own opinions so adding a theme would make things more clear and gives less room for complaints and unhappy people being offended by not winning.

If someone already suggested this just ignore me :rockon:
