Calling all Arizona Growers--I GIVE UP
    #1592062 - 05/30/03 04:26 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

My fellow growers,

I assume you all are coming into some hard times with summer approachin and all.  In fact, so is my pug.  He can't figure out how to keep a 10 gallon aquarium at 95 RH and 75 degrees.  He's tried alternating vortex fanning (cools down nicely, but blows out humidity) with Cool Misting in 20 second increments.  This will not work because he has not found a timer that can sufficiently keep up with that specific work load.  He refuses to leave the coolmist on for more than two minutes because it completely soaks everything inside the aquarium and oversoaks the perlite.  My pugs ambient un negotible temperature is 80 degrees. (his father is fussy about electric bills)  ARIZONANS  UNITE!!!!!.......please

have you tried putting resistance on the fan by either A) reducing
the voltage, or B)placing a filter disk on either side of the fan (intake/outtake)?

Would a bubbler work? It adds a little air exchange, and its cheap too.

I know of somebody that is also trying to grow in AZ and is having the same troubles. The room in which my friend is growing in has an average room temp of 88+. This friend tried ice in containers in the growing chamber as well as frozen bottles of water, both with no success. My friend went out 2 days ago and purchased an evaporative room cooler from the Depot and so far has brought the room down to about 82ish. My buddy is still not happy with this and is still trying more things to get it to the 75ish range. I told my friend to just run the A/C all day but he is gone for most of the day and the electric bill would sky rocket if he were to do that. Any other methods people have tried to bring temps down that have either failed or succeeded?

Does your buddy know that it is cheaper to run the ac at a steady temp all day then to run once he gets home the ac has to work over time to cool hence the strait ac pump motor going.

I told my buddy that; however, he said that this is a seperate part of the house with a seperate A/C that does not really get used. Nobody is in this seperate area and the electric bills get huge if he runs both.

I know what you're going through. I live in Florida.

I know some here disapprove of reptile style ultrasonic humidifiers, but they work best for me in smaller terrariums. I set my timer to one minute every hour. It is enough to raise the humidity to 95-100% and the fog is so fine it never saturates.

All of my timers are digital and can trigger 24 daily events with a minimum of one minute increments. They were purchased at Home Depot for $25 each.

Look for them in PetSmart and expect to spend $35 to $40 for a good one.

To keep temps down, I adjust the AC vents. It's running anyway. Might as well use it.

I live in Southern California, and the temperature is almost constantly over 100 degrees F over here durring the summer (9o+ indoors). People say to turn on the A/C, but because im out most of the day anyways i dont turn on the ac until about an hour before i get home.. (built in timer) .. i dont want to heat my whole house just for a small (relatively) container of stuff.

im looking for a solution as well!!

Go to a sharper image and locate one of those "Personal Air Conditioners" its the small little thing that has 3 metal plates on it, when turned on the plates get really cold. It uses batterys, but has a hookup dor a DC adapter. maybe find a way to integrate this product into your grow system, and have it turn on every now and then to bring the temp down? nother nice feature, it uses a blower fan too, so it can provide some moving air inside the box.

I have a simple solution! Everyone complaining about electric bills should add 2 3 jar casings to their inventory and sell the results. That should cover the whole damn electric bill and then some. It works for me!

Are you sure you want to eat those?:mushroom2:

A good hillbilly way to get the humidity range you want is this: Take a cool mist humidifier, and seal the slit type opening that it came with. Cut a 5/8 hole and stick a water hose into it, and run this into you're terrarium. Now, take a pair of vice grips or whatever you have, and pinch the hose until just enough moisture passes through it to maintain humidity. You can leave it on 24/7 without a timer if you pinch the hose down enough. Experiment until you get it right.
