So after some investigating I think I messed up this first batch of cakes by tightening the tinfoil to tight think I mighta had water sucked through the filtered lids idk il let it ride n next batch I do later il b more careful on PC cycle

The red solo cups I threw in a ziplock to maintain humidity while I looked around the house for a fruiting chamber.

That was two days ago, I still haven't figured anything out...

Lost one of my cakes (a non-entry Yeti) to green stuff and it was touching another cake because it was crowded, so I don't think it will do well either.

My first cake has pins and the other cakes have white stuff, I'll post pics soon.

First gotta poop and make coffee and stretch my fucked up neck

Hey all! First I'd like to say, that I appreciate each and everyone of you here, all the insight and advice, the banter, the back and forth and even the tense moments. I try to find learning opportunity in everything and I can say I have learned a lot just from this thread alone. So I thank you all.

I just birthed one cake tonight because it had not only pinned but grew a few tiny but full mushrooms in the jar. Looking at it out of the jar, I'm thinking possible bacteria. I'm seeing a kind of snot colored slime on the outside, which would make sense why it's putting out shrooms so early I guess. Hopefully the other jars won't have the same fate. I'll grow it out regardless just to see what happens. Here's a photo, feedback welcome as always. (Not my entry photo per se, just took them in  case there's some catastrophe with all the other jars)

Bummer , but take heart that you’ll get a big ass pack of fresh spore prints when this is all over, if you want them. I’ll make a post to let folks know what to do to get ‘em!

I wasn't even picturing photoshop, like somehow something IRL. But I agree: while the idea is fun, IDK yet how to do it in a way that has broad appeal and doesn't end up feeling like homework. We're too international to ask everybody to find a cocktail umbrella on short notice for summer 26.

So….due to a sequence of very unfortunate events, which shall remain private and undisclosed, I must change the prizes for our competition. Know that I am very sorry to do a bait-and-switch, but there really is nothing to be done about it. I am hopeful that those who are continuing to soldier along toward Victory or Valhalla will find the alternative prizes as attractive as the originals, even if they’re a bit different.

The eventual overall winner will receive the Cake Wars trophy that Arkyhog originally made for Cake Wars I, which I had won. It is very cool and truly a one of a kind piece of mushroom art.



Perhaps it will maybe become a traveling trophy, depending on how the new winner feels about continuing the practice in future Cake Wars. Inside the trophy’s base will be spore prints from me and others, and a commemorative Cake Wars II dog tag. They’ll also get a downloadable certificate proclaiming their Cake Wars victory.

All participants will still receive a very generous spore print pack (if they want it), but with a different number and array of prints than previously intended and promised.  Plus a choice of either a commemorative custom dog tag or cork coaster.

Sadly, my just-pinning cakes are no longer a thing, but it was the right thing for me to do in the moment to terminate the grow, as it eased my anxiety substantially. Thankfully, they are easy to replace, anytime.
