try using *very wet* coir…it took me some trial and error to get it figured out how to layer it on nicely, but having it very wet did the trick nicely.

did you take your required pre-dunk n roll pics?

Keeping coir neat has nothing to do with PF tek.
These are old pictures, not part of the cake war.

You can even make muffin top coir cakes.

Yup, “functional coverage” is what I maybe should have written.

Here’s a three shot sequence of pics taken over 48-hrs in my watertub setup with a submerged $5 aquarium heater from walmart, set at 28 C.  Pics are shown in order of 0h, 24h, 48h after coating with coir. I’ve never experienced growth this fast on pf tek cakes before!  I feel I layered on the coir too heavily on the sides and tops, but I’m confident it will eventually get covered by the myc.

I’ll move about half of these to a new tub to allow more room once they start to fruit. I’m really liking how this approach is going so far!

Dunkin'

I took these pics of them in the jars, then soaking in the water then 12 hrs later I snapped  these pics of them rolled and ready.

If you guys say they don't count that's fine, I cbf to redo them, and I'm pretty sure my first BM cake photos count.

I'll just make that one my entry cake if so

Last of the cakes for the competition, two Trinity, a GT and another BM cake

And the rest of the cakes I just put on a bed of coir inside a red solo cup and topped with more coir. I'm seeing if I can rebirth them after the myc moves through the top coat, if that doesn't work I'll just leave them to top fruit I think. Since I'm not fruiting them in a traditional manner they won't be part of the comp

Turns out I hate pf tek [...] Im so annoyed trying to get the coir to stick to the cakes

If it makes you feel any better, I definitely haven't got the hang of getting coir to stick yet either, I've usually top-fruited them instead. I'm hoping making more small cakes will give me enough practice that I finally crack it. I had a rough time doing agar transfers in my pre-pour containers too, until I used an agar punch all over on an un-inoculated plate and practiced transferring over a hundred punches to near the center of other containers. After doing that I felt a LOT more relaxed and confident doing transfers in my SAB, and it became even easier once I started pouring plates so they had shallower sides.

I got my first fruiting pictures this weekend, and I took entry pictures of birthed cakes before. I'm going to wait to choose my final entry until closer to the end, in case some of my later cakes are more photogenic (looking at you, RustyWhyte) and/or I suddenly become less crap at photography, but now I've got usable pictures in the bag. Also several Huautla prints, and probably plenty of RW and Syzygy prints soon enough.

I appreciate the encouragement, homie.

Honestly the only reason I wanted to do PF Tek was for the novelty.

After fucking around with it, I think if I ever need to use brf to clean something up I would just fruit in vitro, I plan to test it out with these jars:

It's just too finicky. I had to turn the coir to mud and put a thick layer to get it to stick, idk how this is gonna turn out. Fingers are crossed but I don't have high hopes

What you did with those solo cups is perfect. Put a bit of field capacity coir in the cup and press it down with another cup, place the cake in the solo, pack more coir around the sides and top it with more coir. Leave the cups overnight then put a lid on top and turn the cup upside down.
I use 500 mL yogurt containers but you just need some type of mold. I don’t think wide mouth cakes would fit in a solo cup.
Basically you’re at the beach with the kids and you’re making sandcastles.

Honestly I feel better about the solo cup ones than the ones I tried to dunk and roll. I packed them good and tight in there.

I was planning on leaving them until it looked consolidated from the top. You're saying to birth it after 24 hours instead?

I have it down pretty well but I’ve had failures and the bastards still crack sometimes when the fruiting is aggressive. Don’t be afraid to pack them but don’t treat them like they owe you money either.
Make a couple, flip one in 24 hours and if it buggers up leave the others for another 24. It won’t hurt them. It’s similar to rolling in vermiculite, I always roll then leave cakes sealed in the water tub overnight before misting. The misting delay helps the vermiculite to adhere to the cakes.
You can also try it with just coir to see if your coir will work. Some brands are coarser and chunky. I use Growit.

Aight, administrative update time.  The pre-dunk and roll pic part of the rules is proving itself to be confusing and a hindrance vs a help, so I'm nixing that part of the rules; will amend the rules in Post #2 in this thread.

Only the final fruiting pic will be required. HOWEVER, the pic must include (in or on the pic) "CAKE WARS II". This part of the rule is to prevent entry of CWII pics in future Cake Wars. Those participants that have already posted pre-dunk-n-roll pics can keep their entries as they are.

Happy to try to clarify any points of confusion. I think this is a good change, but hit me up with any questions/concerns.  My goal is to make the competition open and durable, so that everyone has a solid shot at making it to final judging.

Sorry, I know we were supposed to show it before the roll I thought it floating in the water would be okay. I can label the cups in the picture if that helps?

Nah, it’s all good - getting good rules is an iterative process, and the pre dunk pics requirement seems a bit pointless and confusing.

Peace to you, friend!

Yes, the only pic required is of the final fruited cake, with CAKE WARS II showing in or on the pic.

This is an update to the photo sequence shown in my message from yesterday.

72h since rolling in coir & setting into watertub with submerged aquarium heater set to 28 C:

One of my cakes, PESA/Amazon, has fruited pretty crazily. It had pinned in the jar and seems very happy in this new water tub environment. Will be moving it to another heated water tub to give it more room to grow. I feel like the fruits on the sides may ultimateley topple off, but perhaps not.  My final 3 cakes still in jars are almost ready to birth. All were inoculated on 4/22.
