good catch, so this is the wrong brand? I bought it in a rush and most likely grabbed the wrong type I was assuming to use this in my makeshift SGFC.

Vermiculite is used in PF tek. Perlite enriched with miracle grow would be used in soil to lighten the consistency and add some fertilizer. Straight perlite has been used in fruiting chambers but a water tub is easier and cleaner. I used perlite in tubs for years because it all went to the garden eventually but water tubs are less mess.

My gut feeling tells me that anything with fats and oils in it can't be too bad, if anything the added grease should make the seeds stick less? But maybe it will have the opposite effect, idk, but id bet it wont

I saw birdseed in the store today and immediately I felt drawn to them, just for nostalgia, havent seen a birdseed grow in a while :typing:

I would normally use millet or oats but last time my bag was attracting lots of bugs before I even got to the bottom of it and I made wayyyyyy more spawn at that time, I plan on keeping this grow to 24 jars max and hope to just reuse the same 12 or 24 for the next run

Same, I found perlite messy and was happy after finding the water tub method.

Why does the top of my cakes seem to look a blueish green when they start fruiting? This happened with another batch too. Is it mold? Bacteria? Bruising?

90% of the time if I scrape spores or try to swab them onto agar they never grow?

Why is that?

I've never had any luck making zig zag lines with the swabs and get any growth, I don't understand it..

For germination i exclusively use potato water agar or BRF agar.
Also maybe spores too old or/and dirty.
From swabs you could pick some tissue with a tweezer and bury it in the agar.
Donยดt scrape spores with a scalpel as they get damaged.
Better use sterile Q-Tips or inoculation loops (selfmade) for streaking.

Whatโ€™s the best way to maintain surface conditions and keep the top layer hydrophobic so watered stay as little beads and not looking like I โ€œwetโ€ it? Have a few different shape n size tubs and Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™m getting the FAE ratios right or able to maintain perfectl surface conditions. This pot I originally threw outside but brought in when I saw mice eating the corn is throwing more pins then almost anything Iโ€™ve grown so far and I have a plastic bag on top of it with four small holes at the top. Iโ€™m guessing it could be because it had a lot more FAE from spawn since the top was exposed for a few days the top didnโ€™t fully colonize but is throwing a lot of pins I think I might try a pseudo casing layer of coir or case some tubs as an experiment since Iโ€™ve gotten two flushes from each just about

@jbgtaa

I used a fancy birdseed mix with kibble nuts and stuff in recently, 25% of that 75% of popcorn. Not so far from the ratio in your bag.
Shrooms ate it up no issues.

Good luck with them.

@Elimt73:  not entirely sure - canโ€™t tell from the pics what that might be, but Iโ€™m thinking the cakes are drying out & when that happens molds can take over quickly and the myc can start showing bruising. The pics just arenโ€™t high res enough to zoom in enough to get a good view of it.

Congrats on your grow!

Peace to you, friend!

so I am running a micro grow compared to some of you right now, and didnt wanna drive all the way to the feed store so I grabbed WBS from the store when I was grabbing jars. I also wont use (or have any place to store) an entire 50lb of oats without it going bad or attracting bugs with my timeframe.

just checked the seed I got and it has peanuts and pistachios in it, even though looking at the stuff inside the bag its clearly like 80% millet and Milo. I see very few chunks of what I'd identify as nuts lol. is this gonna work? I've always seen to use the no nut but if I just do a quick cook they should be fine right? if anyone has like a good evidence against it I'll just go buy the oats and store em somewhere out of the way lol

Anytime I have had mystery grains and nuts it has been a contam vector. Pinto beans being the worst.

I buy 50 lb. of oats and it stores in two 5 gallon buckets just fine. No mites or any critters. I also do 7-8 dozen jars at once cuz I hate sterilizing grains. Oats rule!

With grain jars you wait a 10 days consolidation period too?

Edit : seems like no!
