If you want to preserve stuff long-term, it needs to be bone dry. The real potency loss occurs when improperly dried shrooms are stored.

I agree with the core message but disagree with the last sentence. I think we need to move people towards being significantly more paranoid about keeping dry shrooms dry. Nowadays heavy duty desiccant packs and vacuum sealers are very accessible. Shrooms are VERY good at rehydrating again if you aren't a paranoid little freak about it.

RE OP: You can make excellent chicken in an air fryer. Excellent chicken is the antithesis of an excellently dried fungus.

Now..  how the FUCK would i calibrate my dehydrator to the desired temp?  Am i going to ask duc to dissect my nesco and run the heating element through a thermostat? Oh and then calibrate the thermostat with probe? Oh but you also have to calibrate the probe with ice water.

Ffs...

I do mine in a toaster oven at about 150 F. Tried air drying and the mushrooms turned soggy and black.

probably like 100% because a dehydrator is big.

i actually did some research about Brazilian laws and asked chatgpt about some things, and is even worse than the one's i know.

in Brazil you can't import second hand things, for some twisted reason, i didn't know that.

i thought that if it was declared less than 50$ with shipping included and if it was a gift, i wouldn't have to pay any taxes, but that's wrong, i still need to pay 17% and if it is more than 50$ i have to pay 92%(yea, Brazil laws are trash).

I've seen that shipping this would for sure surpass 50$, thus would be pretty much impossible for me to pay it, actually, even more expensive than buying one here.

as the dehydrator is big, the custom officer will probably doubt the declared price a lot. thus will probably tax the custom in the price of a brand new Nesco dehydrator.

Well, FWIW we've also got a DIY dehydrator tek, if that suits your fancy.

That said, if the airfryer is working fine for you then

And in turn, I have to do the same to you: mostly agree with the core message, but disagree with the end there.

I think Churpee is right that improperly dried fruits are the usual culprit, because people don't know what properly dried fruits look like and often end up not drying them down enough.

But I also think you're right that people aren't nearly paranoid enough about the containers they store fruits in, or re-introducing moisture when they dip into a container.

HOWEVER, I myself am not really a fan of vacuum-sealed bags or desiccant packs. I've seen desiccant packs become moisture reservoirs when conditions are damp enough, and I'm paranoid about permeability of ANY plastic bags. I like well-sealed glass jars, and for long-term storage I like them stuffed to the gills if possible. No jars get opened, whether to take material out or add it, without being heated up first so that airflow is mostly moving out rather than in, and the moisture retention capacity of the fruits and air in the jar is as low as possible.

Regardless, I think something got a little lost in translation, because I think Churpee's main point was that it's counter-productive to worry too much about potency loss during dry-down when potency loss during storage is a much more worrisome issue.

Using hermetic glass jars are truly the best way, no doubt.

Storing in powder also seem to be the best way.

I don't think you need to be "paranoid" about that, because is very low maintenance.

I will maybe do a thread about this in the future but my method is pretty much this:

Cracker dry
Powder
Buy small hermetic glass jars, from 40ml to 100ml, to have the least amount of headspace as possible. The smaller the jar the better.
Compact the powder inside, very compacted
Silica, change the silica every time you open.
Close it up tight
You can also put aluminum foil outside the jar, fix it with tape. Light protection.

If you can vacuum seal, use argon or another gas without oxygen do it.

And that's it. There's tests showing that pills loses only 4,1% in a year. So in 5 years you will only lose 20%. This is pretty much a bigger pill made of glass, what is better because have zero air exchange, moisture, and even light if you use aluminum foil.

Is good for someone who will do larger dosages instead of microdosages, and if you prefer extracts instead of eating the shroom.

with powder you can compact it better, making an "solid block" that has less interstitial air than whole shrooms.

if you leave minimal headspace, and turn the powder into this "block" i said, you mechanically remove most of the air inside the jar. that's why i say that using small jars are better. i recommend using silica to make sure anything gets dry.

some data for this:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28462347/fpart/1/vc/1

capsules shows a 0,54% of psylocibin loss in a year

meanwhile, other samples, in their dried whole state lost 6% in a year, in other samples 23,4% in a year, and the PE single fruit sample lost the incredible amount of  58,8%. I'm only counting psilocybin in all the samples.

this GordoTek table also shows that powder is better than whole, with and without argon.

What do you recommend for someone that doesnt have unlimited shrooms? The guy that helps me out told me years ago its best to grind the whole batch together. Mostly as a harm prevention warning and way for a newb to get consistent dosing.

Powder is great to homogenize your dose across variable potency, yes. Absolutely. In terms of potency retention, powder isn’t really worse or better as long as it’s taken care of properly. Powder does absorb ambient moisture more readily than whole fruits, which already absorb moisture pretty dang fast, and the protective “matrix” of dried tissue is gone. Lot of surface area exposed, potentially, to air, light, and water.

Now as long as you take care of it, spend as little time with that jar open dose to dose as possible, it’s not an issue. It’s just erroneous to say it’s the best storage method to retain potency.

There’s not a massive difference between whole dried fruits and powdered fruits storage wise once properly put away. The whole thing about foil and argon and stuff is just overdone silliness we see in fresh and excited people.

Capsules? No, capsules are porous and absorb moisture and oxygen. This means you need to put silica in the mason jar at the very least. Oxygen absorbers, or using a inert gas is recommended. Blocking light is also recommended.

A desiccant in a sealed jar is fine. Pills are commonly done with no issue. Inert gas is overkill. Oxygen absorbers are not recommended over desiccant, because you can really only use one or the other. Desiccant can render o2 absorbers useless, and the desiccant is seen as more impactful for preservation.

As B has said, desiccant isn’t even 100% required, although I do use them.

Chiron, with all due respect I don’t think you’re in a position to answer questions yet.

The real question is, what the fuck is YOUR problem?
