Re: Why is air fryer not better than dehydrator? [Re: Traveled]
    #29588646 -

the air fryer method is something i believe it will work, and i trust is better than a dehydrator, but i didn't make any hasty and absolute statements because it is something i need to test first to see how it will go.

as i haven't tested it yet, i will at least say why do i think it will work, and why do i think it didn't work with other people or why is not recommended at this moment.

why it works and why is better(IN MY OPINION WITHOUT ABSOLUTE STATEMENTS):

1. the air fryer has a higher RPM, this means the air flow is more potent.
2. it has a higher temperature(from the mechanisms shared in this thread i said this is better).
3. the steam is expelled by physics, like a pressure cooker does without the jiggle weight.
4. you reduce time of exposure because of the higher temps and higher air flow, meaning you will have more potent fruits. the higher temps are not a concern because of "evaporative cooling"(the core of the fresh shroom gets way less hot than the outside because of the water) and because of the natural stability of psilocybin in higher temps.

now the downsides:

1. you NEED to cut the shroom in half because of a phenomenon called "case hardening".
2. you need to monitor the shrooms to not let them sit too long.
3. you can't put too much shrooms in a air fryer.
4. you need to put something above the shrooms, so the shrooms don't fly inside the tray.

now, why do i think this is not a valid method yet, or that is a general consensus that it doesn't work:

1. because most people don't cut the shrooms, leaving the "case hardening" phenomenon happens, trapping water in the core of the shroom.
2. because they use it like a normal dehydrator, leaving to dehydrate for several hours more than it needs.
3. they maybe clump the shrooms inside the tray.
4. they maybe put a mode in the air fryer where air flow is reduced, and we want air flow to be increased, not reduced.
5. they maybe don't put something above the shroom, letting it fly inside the tray and touching the heating element, meaning that will burn instantly.

that pretty much summarizes everything.

nothing was directly at you personally. and which absolute statements i did? i explained my point and showed some friendly disagreement to what you said. and in my vision that's totally fine and i did not lack respect with you neither you with me.

if you truly thinks this, then point exactly where my fault was. maybe somethings got a bit "aggressive" because English is not my first language obviously, and because i was too focused in sharing my point of view.

I heard that the best way is to put them in a titanium chamber which has been purged with helium, and vacuumed to -2000 kpa. Make sure you set them on top of a bed of anhydrous sodium sulfate inside the chamber with a layer of 3mm silicon beads (enough to suspend them over the sodium sulfate). Then dip the chamber in liquid nitrogen for one hour.

They come out so dry it hurts to look at them because the pull the moisture right out of your eyeballs. You'll never forget the first time you feel that feeling. Brings tears to the eye just thinking about it.

To me its more a wheel modification that humans do constantly. Anyone watching motocross today? They are constantly reinventing their tire treads. Doesnt mean they dont value the tires that came before. Just like trying a dehydrator at different temps or trying an air fryer doesnt discount all the decades of people having great results at 165F.

don't know if anyone is still watching this thread or what, but i actually tested dehydrating with the air fryer.

put the temperature in 80C, cut in half the big one's. in 30 minutes it reached cracker dry state they were looking good, no blueing, no nothing.

just to be sure it was cracker dry, i put it in a hermetic jar with silica for 24 hours.

and... it didn't work, lol. Don't recommend trying it at home.

i boiled water in the microwave and did a infusion with dried shroom powder. the tea got blue, what had already worried me. i ingested it, waited 90 minutes and only had a very small change in perception, what could be seen as placebo, not hallucinogenic, nothing.

I've taken 1,6g dried, the strain is a stabilized version of Australian.

this doesn't mean heat causes degradation, just means that using a air fryer is not the best idea. what probably happened is that the air fryer has a bad regulation of temperature, thus the temperature has been gone above 150+ and caused a massive loss in psilocybin.

at least it was a small flush and i didn't lost much. next time i will test with a normal fan + silica, as i don't have nothing better and see how it goes. it could also be that the genetics was weak from the beginning, but the blue in the tea had worried me and probably something got fucked up in the dehydration phase.

some pics to see how it was fresh and dried:

Any desire to play with electronics? You could find the heating element wires and manually connect and disconnect to reduce temps. Or put a regulator that would allow you to dial down the power and temps. I know its Brasil and not as easy as next day Amazon delivery.

Or could wrap the shrooms in foil and poke a ton of holes to act as a heat blocker. Or use foil inside the machine to block the heating element itself.

i think a air fryer works with a thermostat, that is a piece that detects temperature. the point is that they are not that precise. is possible to regulate them differently, but honestly, too much work and too much risk. i would not like to break my air fryer.

if someone likes it and wants to test, maybe a better air fryer would work. i think air fryer with dehydration options could have a more precise thermostat.

blocking the heating element would be the same as dehydrating with a fan.

i just don't think is worth the trouble, lol. if someone has a dehydrator with 80C-90C it would work very well. or a good air fryer with precise temperature regulation.

Nice info. Thanks for sharing.

I will repeat this using mine with the dehydrator function on my next grow. I have a nice Breville with total temp control and two levels of convection blower. So I can play around with different temperatures and air flows. I still think that air fryers don't move enough air to prevent cooking, but that is a total guess.

It is going to be a while, though. I will share the results of all of the different tests from room temp with min and max air flow to dehydrators on min and max temp to the air fryer at various temps above normal dehydrator max. Then maybe we will finally put this baby to bed.

Thanks for this thread. I was already planning the room temperature vs dehydrator comparisons but this has inspired some changes in the upper temperature range.

that's great. finally, we'll be able to see the magnitude of each degradation factor during dehydration.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
