If u look around in search engine here at the shroomery u can find viable effective tests that ppl can get to test potency by color of a solution down to the mg I don't have it linked or threaded n don't remember name of the test xd n u can not assume if u have mushrooms u can easily test potency through different drying methods with as fresh shrooms as possible. We are pioneers not guessers 😎 as I said before il be waiting for research results if u do decide to do this as that information as to what is truly the best method to get the highest potency out of your fungi would be a great benefit to the community!

Have you heard of the Dunning Kruger effect? It's when people with limited knowledge of a subject overestimate their abilities and believe they know better than the experts in that field.

I'm happy to let anyone reading this thread assess the peer reviewed scientific evidence I've provided that proved that heat degrades potency and fact check everything I've said, with search engine, AI or the published research I've listed and then judge that against the fact that you failed to provide a shred of evidence that even remotely suggests you know what you're talking about when it comes to the finer points of alkaloid chemistry and your source which is "Trust me, bro".

You know that's how "Bro science" got its name, right?

Right! I had bought a jar of cyanescens from a friend they where wild n also  the person used excessive heat in the drying process I was eating 3g n only getting mild visuals n some stimulation lol less than I'd get from the plane cubes I grow now n properly dry ( when I bought that jar I didnt know how to grow lol) the stuff I grow I tend to stick with 1.5 to 2g for most days xD  the stapes I grew n air dryed turned into basically diamonds lol so dense i literally bent one of the thinner knifes I had that waa kinda dull trying to cut it 😂 i took 2.5g of my stapes first time trying them n yea... I had work in 16? Hours? I was past pluto for 24 hours I started to come down at 22 hrs n couldn't sleep entire...fricking...trip... Fun times :mushroom2: now I only do 1 gram of the dinser varietys 😳

Again, apologies, didn't read everything, but:

1. Oxidation will absolutely occur inside fruits. They're not betel nuts or some shit. They're still pretty porous. Also, yah know, there's oxygen INSIDE the cell membranes. Complete exclusion of moisture and oxygen is the only way to completely stop oxidation, and that typically means stuffing an airtight container with bone-dry fruits. Some oxidation will still probably occur at the outset, but then the relatively little oxygen that exists in the jar will be bound up.

2. Therefore, being worried about surface area makes no sense to me. I shred my fruits before loading them into the dehydrator, to prevent case drying and also to inspect the interior for signs of- wait for it- oxidation. (OK, really, senescence- but there's definitely still oxidation involved.)

3. I'm not necessarily all that worried about potency loss due to moisture, though I do believe it's a real thing. My bigger concern is fruits going off due to moisture. I spent a good chunk of my life eating air-dried fruits that were "fine." And I also thought that a stomach ache and/or vomiting and/or an accompanying sense of existential dread were just a natural part of the come-up. Never again.

Not exactly.

It's that WE ALL have a tendency to overestimate our knowledge of and skill level at things we have less experience with, while doing exact opposite for things we have extensive experience with.

I still posit that a few people working in a cutting edge area to generate a couple dozen papers on this subject might be experts in biochemical analysis, but that doesn't make them experts in this field. We'd need hundreds of thousands of datapoints before we could translate a lot of the practical knowledge people have into provable scientific language, and my honest opinion is that this will never happen because the money will just go to figuring out what they can synthesize and patent.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go eat some of my inferior "dehydrator blast" harvest and contemplate the true nature of science, bro.

you didn't provide no reliable scientific research, and that dunning kruger effect would be about you.

the paper you showed that has actually a chart comparing is pure of bullshit as the freeze dried shroom has 3x more psylocibin than the even the FRESH shroom. this doesn't make sense, because it pretty much means that psylocibin would be created out of nowhere in the process of freeze drying.

pretty much what you said is "scientists do that, so i do too", but like i said, they could simply do for other reasons.

i actually explained my reason, you just used ad hominem

yes that's what i said. it was dave bennet that was saying shrooms skin are not porous.

i don't know what part of the "surface area" thing you are saying, but i agree in cutting shrooms in half for dehydration.

maybe it was because of the study that used dried shroom powder that had more surface area to heat. this means that whole fruits would have even less degradation

Maybe slow your roll.  You really want to pull the DK card having been here for what *checks watch* fifteen minutes?  Your tone is insulting, "bro".  We have among the ranks of our  TC's, actual scientists and chemists who would probably rather not have this discussion with you at all because youre being pretty silly.  Just... settle down.  You dont know what youre talking about and thats fine.

You've been on a remarkable journey from not knowing why it was a stupid idea to dry mushrooms in an air fryer to being an expert on alkaloid chemistry in just four days.

Why don't you try it and see if you're so confident that you're correct about heat not degrading potency.

Don't shoot the messenger. All I'm doing is presenting peer reviewed evidence from five decades of research by world renowned scientists and mycologists in the field of alkaloid chemistry that proves that heat degrades potency.

This conversation is open to anyone to post research that disproves what I've been saying. I'm happy to change my opinion in light of new evidence and if I'm wrong I'll admit it and take it on the chin.

All I am saying is slow down.  Looks like you have a lot of interesting information to go over. Maybe its a game-changer, maybe not. This isn't reddit. The loudest voices with the most sources don't take the spotlight here. This is a community so just relax. If what you're saying is true, you don't need to condescend anyone to make it true-er.

Just two weeks past, i had my entire mind melted and my ego mutilated by two grams of nesco-dried yeti.  I thank god they weren't more potent than they were. Every single one of us older growers has had a hundred experiences such as this with dry or fresh mushrooms.  You're not speaking to a room full of gawping college kids.

I suggest, if you really want to talk about this, that you bring your data to a brand new thread of your own, and start at the level of mutual respect.

Anyway, thanks for being here.

the question was about "why YOU PEOPLE found it a stupid idea", and i got my answer, some guys above said that air fryer lock moisture inside, meaning that will steam cook the shroom. it is only you that initiated the debate about "heat vs no heat"

and i will try it, lol. i trust in my reasoning and i know that heat don't degrade psylocibin. the only way that this couldn't work was for the reasons the guys above said, but i know that air fryers push steam out if the pressure of the air fryer gets high because of steam. like a pressure cooker does if you take out the jiggle weight.

Serious question:

In a world where every medium and scientific pursuit or engineering enterprise has its own set of kooks and random woo woo debates, and datasets that end up being essentially worthless, what will it take for randos who turn up to finally acknowledge that THIS is a world-renowned place with decades of history?

What will it take for people to wrap their heads around the idea that there may well be world-renowned-scientist adjacent people right here in River City, who choose for any number of reasons to identify themselves here as TurdBurglar69 or whatever?

why are you asking about it? is a consensus in the community that heat does not degrade psylocibin, at least, not more than oxygen, water, light, and that slow drying is worse. and i agree. then why you're asking me this?

Ok, here's what's happening:

When I'm responding directly to someone, I typically use the "quote" function. Unless it's just obviously a back-and-forth conversation.

Nothing I've said here was meant to be a direct response to you personally. More just general comments directed at the entire thread. The fact that it says I'm replying to you is just because you happened to type the last message.

Thank you for the welcome!

I guess my posts could appear frenetic to some people but that's what happens if four or five people are all talking to you at the same time about different aspects of your position or argument. That takes four or five replies in response every time I post. Check back through the thread. My tone hasn't changed and the more open minded people I've engaged with are thanking me for the interesting conversation. The ad hominem attacks started when people who haven't contributed anything of value to the discussion started popping up in the thread to call me a troll or disparage my knowledge of the subject on something as arbitrary as my post count.

I will collate all the in depth scientific evidence I've been posting about the adverse effects of heat on potency and start my own thread but it does all boil down to a very simple principle that anyone who's done high school chemistry can understand.

Alkaloid degradation is a chemical reaction. Heat is a catalyst that increases the rate of chemical reactions. Therefore, heat degrades potency because it speeds up all the chemical reactions like hydrolysis, oxidisation and photo-degradation that degrade potency.

If you don't believe some rando troll with a low post count have a look at ReverendMyc's extract thread. His latest experiment demonstrated that heat degrades potency. He made an extract and evaporated one sample in a vacuum chamber without heat and the other in a vacuum chamber with heat which resulted in a 20% loss of potency in the heated extract. And that's in an oxygen free environment so it's reasonable to assume that potency loss would be higher without the vacuum.

And this isn't new knowledge. It's forgotten knowledge. Click on some of the Similar Threads from the early 2000s that are displayed underneath this thread and you'll see that people knew that heat degrades potency back then and all the dehydrator posts are talking about how to disconnect the heating elements before using them. So it's not like I'm making claims about something that wasn't understood in the past.

Hi Dave!
You’ve put a lot of research into the topic of drying and I would like to ask you this - what is your recommendation for home cultivators for long time storage? You mentioned air drying for few days and then finishing them off in dehydrator in low temperatures, but is it enough drying for long time storage?  Do you cut the bigger fruits in half or something or you keep them whole? Also what’s your opinion on storing dried mushroom powder in capsule form?

I mean - I’m not that worry about potency degradation during drying in dehydrator on high because I only grow for personal use and “I can always eats more”, but if “air drying for few days and then finishing in on low temp in dehydrator” works better for preserving the alkaloids and works for long time storage then I’m all for it. I’m going to split my next grow in half and see if I can notice the difference myself.
