Re: Why is air fryer not better than dehydrator? [Re: Mr Piggy]

makes sense, it was what the other guy above said. well, it can't be maybe remediated by opening the air fryer at every 15 minutes or so to let the moisture out?

I've been seeing this method on AI and it said that would probably take around 1 hour to get to cracker dry, as the air fryer has a fan with higher RPM than a dehydrator and generates a heat higher than a dehydrator also(80C).

do you think it can work?

Never use AI for mushroom growing.

I'm going to say this one more time and then I am going to block you for trolling if you keep pushing back.

An air frier is not a dehydrator.  Use a dehydrator.

For the third time, the chart you posted doesn't show what happens when fresh mushrooms are dried at those temperatures. It shows the potency loss in just 30 minutes when fungal material was exposed to those temperatures. To calculate the potential potency loss at those temperatures you'd have to multiply the potency loss in 30 minutes into your total drying time in hours.

And the same paper you posted claiming it shows elevated temperatures don't degrade potency clearly states in its conclusion "To prevent the degradation of fungal tryptamines during sample processing, the most suitable conditions were to dry the fruiting bodies in the dark at room temperature."

So you've proved yourself wrong with your own source material.

I don't know if you are trolling or what.

In fresh fruits is obviously be even safer, as fresh shrooms have water. Water absorbs part of the temperature. Thus not every part of the shroom will achieve 100C for example. The test was also made in shroom powder, that have maximum area to heated air to heat the shroom. Whole shrooms would have even LESS degradation.

And yes, is better to dehydrate in lower temperature, but only if you have a extremely powerful dehydrator (like scientists have), and that is not accessible for most people. I already said that. They generally freeze dry the stuff or use extremely professional dehydrators, this means the RPM of the machine is so high that they can be dried in a couple of hours without any increase in temperature.

Blimey! We got there in the end. Apart from the high RPM lab dehydrators you claim scientists use which I'm not sure exist. Normal dehydrators are fine as long as you keep the drying temperature under 40C (104F) to avoid unnecessary and completely avoidable losses in potency.

The first paper ever written on psilocybin by Albert Hofmann mentions that the alkaloids are unstable at elevated temperatures as does every paper that's studied the effects of temperature on potency since, right up to to the latest paper to be published on the subject investigating potency across multiple Psilocybe species which was published in 2022.

You may not have heard of some of the authors but they're some of the world's leading Psilocybe and psilocybin researchers.

I think they probably know what they're talking about when it comes to the finer points of alkaloid chemistry, don't you?

So a dehydrator full of freshly harvested whole mushrooms will retain more potency at a setting of 100f or less as compared to a higher setting? Seems like the extended time the mushrooms will stay wet would be detrimental versus drying as quickly as possibleโ€ฆbut Iโ€™m no scientist. Am I getting the gist of what youโ€™re proposing?

Yes, that's correct. The lower the drying temperature, the higher the potency of the resulting dried fruits. It's worth noting that 20 to 25C (68 to 77F) was the lowest drying temperature used in any research so drying them at lower temperatures than that would result in even higher in potency.

Personally I never dry freshly harvested fruits in a dehydrator. I air dry them first at room temperature, with or without a fan depending on time of year and the weather, until they're leathery dry and then finish them off in the dehydrator set under 40C for a couple of hours to bring them up to cracker dry for storage right at the end. The alkaloids get more stable as the fruits dry so this method minimises the time the fruits are exposed to elevated temperatures.

Those hanging net weed drying racks are perfect for air drying the fruits before they go in the dehydrator.

I think people are over estimating how much potency is lost by letting wet fruits sit out for ~24 hours.

I have a small dehydrator, so it can sometimes take a couple days to dehydrate a large harvest. While I wait, my fruits just sit in a plastic tote in open air at room temperature.

I have bagged my dehydration runs separately a few times and never noticed a difference between the first batch dehydrated and the last ones.

I'm guessing fruits only lose a percent or two over a few days of being wet. The difference between 12 hours or 24 hours in a dehydrator is probably negligible regarding short term potency loss, but makes a huge difference for long term storage.

As air drying at room temperature results in the highest potency the advice that you have to get them in the dehydrator as fast as possible or they'll degrade has to be incorrect.

Air drying for me usually takes at least three of four days before they go in the dehydrator.

Try air drying some at low temperature and some at full blast in a dehydrator and see if you can tell the difference. The alkaloid profile is completely different in low temperature dried fruits as elevated temperatures also degrade the unstable precursor alkaloids like baeocystin and norbaeocystin so you get more of a fresh fruits like experience.

i don't think so, as there's 3 factors to degradation: heat, oxygen and water.

letting them dry slow means that both oxygen and water are degrading.

there's also the enzymes that degrade psylocibyn. enzymes are denatured at higher temps.

the point of heat is that increasing heat decreases time in contact with oxygen and water. this leads to a "pick the less harmful poison" situation, where you need to choose the one that is less detrimental, and heat is the least detrimental for the reasons i stated above.

My point is how much degradation actually happens over a short period of time is likely negligible. Like what % of actives are lost per hour after harvest. I only have personal anecdotal data, but I suspect it's months to see a measurable difference.

We dehydrate for long term storage. I think the "dehydrate them ASAP" mantra has been taken too literally and ran with into absurdity.

I've air dried fruits that were plenty potent months later, so it's not like your psilocybin is breaking down so fast that any increase in speed will make a noticeable difference. Just doing the job right and getting the fruit 100% dry matters more than any timeline.

It seems like the argument is about when the lake stops being muddy water and starts being watery mud. It's a distinction that's not very important, IMO.

If your gonna get all technical then stop assuming. Do a test n write down results for potency of air dryed vs low temp dryed vs high temp rushed of the same strain. Sorry just this seems like it's turning into a never ending rolling wheel my guy. As I said n others said air drying doesn't seem that bad I base my info off the 15 ppl I share with whom all say they are the strongest they've ever had xD not evin mutys or pe just plane cubes lol. And if your really worried the extract to tea dry shelf stable practically and more potent + some people say it makes cubes more *clean* n better experience now that I've ranted il await testing results ๐Ÿง.  Edit. Agreed puff ๐Ÿ’€it's watery muddd :crazy2:

Lol. Normal dehydrators can't do that, and are not fine. At 40C it would take like 48+ hours to dehydrate, time that the shroom are degrading.

Heat also degrades, but less than water and oxygen, because heat makes dehydration time faster.

Thus i don't agree with that. What I mean to say is that if you have a very powerful dehydrator, with high RPM, increasing heat may be unnecessary, as it will probably already dehydrate very fast. Even in this case is probably good to increase heat anyway.

even to this point you also didn't explain the logic about not increasing heat, you just say "scientists do that, thus you should follow", but they can do that for several other reasons.

for example, using a simple, easy, reliable method to dry the shroom, even though is not optimal. they generally don't need to preserve the maximum amount because their studies are not focused in found the best way to dry the shroom, but on the stability and behavior of psylocibyn, psilocin etc.

is impossible to not assume, as there is no data comparing drying methods to see the results, so we have to make deductions based on the data we have.

fresh shrooms have enzymes, oxidates, and can be degraded by light, this is the data we have. heat can also degrade, but like i said several times, is the less worse of all.

this means that, if you put some stuff in a fan to dehydrate for 24 hours + 24 hours in silica, means that the enzymes have 48 hours to dephosphorylate psylocibin into psilocin, 48 hours to oxygen to degrade and some hours of light degrading psylocibin.

psilocin is highly unstable and will pretty much vanish in minutes in contact with oxygen .

i would do the comparison if i had the equipment but i don't. anecdotal experience generally don't mean shit, as your shrooms could be naturally more potent, and even if you choose a worse dry method it can still slap, because has more alkaloids than a average shroom. set and setting also make a good part of the experience and perception of potency.

and i agree that tea is the best way to consume.

don't know if it have a study showing that. it obviously don't take months, as if you put a fresh shroom in a table is probable that will rot and have no psylocibyn in less than a week. this means that 48 hours probably degrades a significant amount, but of course, not sure about that.

more exposure time means more exposure to degradation components, light, oxygen, and water.

fresh shrooms have enzymes, oxidates, and can be degraded by light, this is the data we have. heat can also degrade, but like i said several times, is the less worse of all as it decreases time of exposure.

this means that, if you put some stuff in a fan to dehydrate for 24 hours + 24 hours in silica, means that the enzymes have 48 hours to dephosphorylate psylocibin into psilocin, 48 hours to oxygen to degrade and some hours of light degrading psylocibin.
