INjured or sick substrates perform badly in any way. You cant fruit "half a cake", even though you can still get fruits by making say a shoebox. What I find among the "varietys" online here today is that many of them are versions of each other. For a PF TEK grow, Id go with a classic: B+, Cambodian, Equador..thats just me.

If your substrate is not PF TEK (Textbook) then I cant help, I only stick to the classic recipe, though ive tried adding in coffee, limestone etc. Gypsum is what I always add: Helps keep the substrate airy..which helps a lot...

What’s the general consensus on misting and fanning these days, in a water tub setup?

THe cake will have enough water from the dunk to give your first flush, whats important is NOT to let the surface dry and thats also why we use the roll, to give some fake "top soil", so our cakes can sprout:) Overwatering will cause misgrowth although it is not established wether or not it causes "aborts" to appear more frequently. Some pins just never make it. DO it this way, it will save you headache:

1. Dunk the cake for 24 hours,
2. Roll it in verm and put some verm on the top..(sprinkle the hell out of it)
3. Wait for 3 days, then mist the cake evenly on all sides, now the verm
you rolled in should have stuck to the mycelium and then its onto,
4. Day 8-12, FRUITING..yaya...

Then repeat Step 1 after each flush.

Oh fanning, moisture will evaporate naturally, so there is no need to fan that bad, but give it fresh air exchange, you dont want stale OLD air inside your growspace. I solve it by placing a fan in one end of my room, to give some FAE, but NEVER FAN the cakes, it will dry them out...so NO FAN INSIDE THE GROWSPACE.

Many thanks for that CW. I misted a day early, this was day two! I’ll leave them alone now then and just wait. The tubs lid has a 1cm gap on one side to allow for FAE, so everything should be set!

Summer solstice is in like 6 weeks! Can't wait.

All my damn ass cakes are colonizing and slow I think I maybe packed them too tightly , it was my first time.

I should've tried a few different packing methods and then labeled them to record results..

Ah well, next time

My cakes are progressing nicely - from 60-90% colonized. Seeing strong rhizo growth on all but Thai Pink Buffalo, which seems less rhizo, but still moving along nicely.

My all time fav variety, F+, is the one I am most excited about…here’s a pic:

Birthed my third one today, as seen above, it pinned in the jar. Two in total! It was inoculated under 6 weeks ago. Feisty.

@Penman - if you’re gonna compete for the Cake Wars II fabulous prizes, you have to declare you are a participant - a post saying “I’m in” is all it takes.

And if competing, make sure to take pics with “Cake wars II” in or on the image, (1) after birthing and before dunk-n-roll, and (2) at full fruiting maturity.

Failure to have both pics OR to not show “cake wars ii” in or on the pics will result in disqualification from competition.

I'm just using up spore syringes I already have, most of which were vendor freebies. If some of them don't take, it's not a big loss, and if the others fruit enough to make a ton of prints to share, great. I prefer to work with prints, swabs, and agar, and with LI when I'm doing PF tek cakes (especially coir-based ones) or bottle growing, but joining CAKE WARS II sounded fun and the rules required using MSSs.

I've fruited some BRF pucks (which are like 1/4 of a cake) and several grain cakes made from literally just a tablespoon or two of brown rice. Obviously they aren't going to yield much, but that's not the point -- I'm looking for in vitro pins or interesting fruits to clone and print. I'll see if the stalled cakes will at least fruit enough to yield a single usable print.
