Made up some tubs a few days ago. Process was basically just put a few handfuls of hardwood smoker pellets in a tub, add boiling water, cover and wait until cool, add spawn. I figure that between lack of nutrition in the pellets, high spawn ratio and aggressiveness of IWL that I should be able to get away with not doing a proper pasteurization but I suppose we shall see... Honestly I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to woodlovers and this is one of my just for fun projects anyway :bongload:



One of them was topped with a thin layer of coir I had leftover from a different project



Everybody seems happy so far, I expect these all will be fully colonized within 24-48 hours



I am going to leave the one topped with coir as-is for now to see what that does, if anything. Also got some chips soaking now to top one of the 100% pellet tubs:



I still have some details to sort out but the plan is to build a new fruiting chamber for these next week sometime. I doubt unmodified shoeboxes are going to be the way to go here.

How is everybody doing with their IWL?

It's been extremely sunny and dry in the Netherlands lately and while the temperarures are now good, what we really need is two weeks of rainy and cloudy weather before there's a good chance to grow some fruits.

Grew some brf pucks from spores of my indoor grown IWL in hopes of finding a 'strain' that's better suited for indoor  cultivation than my current clone is.


These will be spawned to wood chips soon.

Some more indoor trials are coming up while we wait for outdoor circumstances to get better.

My own planters have mycelium about 1/2” under the surface. The planters were started with the colonized “ cake” from my indoor attempt, the other from grain spawn mixed directly with raw chips outside.

Currently I have 10 qt. Jars colonizing , these were shaken up 5 days ago. Lastly, I have 5 good looking cultures to be sent to grain this weekend. I may not get fruits this year but it won’t be from lack of effort. I’m excited to see everyone's labors come to fruition. Cheers!

Beds look good, but I don't expect them to fruit in the near future.
Catch like 25-40 snails in the beds, daily. Tried hosing them down every day... Nothing. It's just not the year.

Yeah I feel you but there's no need to despair just yet. The weather hasn't  been cooperating at all here locally but I've seen IWL fruit in August before so there's  still time. We need that usual wet summer weather that we always bitch about :smile:

Still no luck with the weather. For fruiting IWL outside at least. It's been great for most people though; lots of sun and little rain.

There's still some time left though. The first year I saw fruits in August so no need to despair just yet.

Meanwhile indoor:



2 more monotubs with the same clone in it as outdoors. The same one that fruited sparsely indoors last time. I may try casing one of them with potting soil or smth later. Could try a few things out. One is from the 4th and one is from the 10th of July.




The cups are ms to brf-puck to wood chips & coir. Hoping to find another clone that performs better indoors. Also got 2 cups of the clone to compare.

1 brf-puck was crumbled and split over 2 cups so 3 different ms cultures. Made July 4th. The cups with the clones are from July 10th.

It has been almost 2 years since we first sent in some samples for testing and at last we have a verdict:

Ngl, was worried that I wasn't  going to see a single pin this summer. But the weather has changed back to normal temps, about 23°C and I've just spotted some pins

IWL on PF-tek.  While I was looking for a way to get better results with swabs, and Tweeq asked for as many techniques as possible to try to grow IWL, I used part of the print to make a couple of swabs (a blasphemy, but for the cause!). Let the swabs dry for a couple of days, and then used the method I still use if I work with swabs (I use 2 30ml PP5 cups with a hole in the middle of the lid, fill them with 10 ml of water, PC with whatever I am running. I drop the swab in the first cup, wait for 10 seconds without agitation, put some fibers with spores on agar, and drop the swab in the second cup).

I usually use a sterilized syringe partially filled with water to 'hose off' as many spores as possible. If that doesn't work well I squeeze the swab against the wall of the cup. Ditch the swab, and fill the syringe(s) with the water from the cup.

Wait a couple of hours/days so the spores get hydrated, and use it to noc PF-tek jars or a BRF puck. Then either put the mycelium to agar, or put the cakes to substrate/use the colonized top of the puck to noc some grains.

It works for me, also with received swabs, but I prefer to avoid them if possible ;-). As you can see, it worked with the IWL, but since print->agar worked a lot more comfortable and clean, there was no use to work with the cake so far.

Update:
Gave new chips to both my clone and original ms patches outside. I'm not sure hoe much life is still left in either of them but I spotted some live mycelium and thought let's just give it another go.

Also, I have spawned some newly made clone mycelium to one of my old barrel planters.


And today, I used my old indoor tubs from last summer as spawn for another bed (my old Ovoid bed)

Both tubs were refilled with soaked wood chips and I used some of the colonized chips fron the original tubs as spawn. So a lazy, non-sterile refill. I'm excited to try this because I've come to believe that working with just sterile wood spawn has been counter productive. Maybe some measure of bacterial activity is needed for a good fruiting to happen.

Hey Tweeq, looking good!

I am still trying, but so far they've refused to do anything. Hard refuse. By now I can even say that no other species has ever given me so much trouble... My outdoor patches seem to have died back over winter, with one exception. Made new ones... Have some small indoor projects that have been going for +-3 and +-5 months now.
