psilocybe subaeruginosa grow attempt 1

About 4.5 months ago i finally realized that the mushrooms that i had found last season were psilocybe subaeruginosa which grow on wood and not BRF cakes , after many attempts on these cakes and no fruiting i discovered the wood chip method and this is how i have gone so far: 1. got 6 250ml ball jars half full of rye seed 2. pressure cooked these bad boys 3. inoculated them (through the lid) with a spore syringe i made up in my sterile environment 4. placed them in a warm cupboard 5. after 3-4 weeks they were colonized, every 3rd day i gave them a wack to break up the mycelium 6. i emptied one of the jars into a plastic container and placed a piece of damp cardboard on top 7. After 1.5 weeks the mycelium had crept through and it was time to add the wood chips 8. i grabbed a couple of handfuls (going small scale for this grow) of eucalyptus mulch from the park and pressure cooked it for 1 hour (smelled great) 9. when the chips had cooled i carefully placed them like tetris blocks into the container on top of the carboard for maximum chip to box capacity 10. KEPT A LID ON for humidity but because it was so exiting it was aired every 2 days when i checked on the growth 11. after a very long 2 months the wood was colonized 12. i placed a layer of very finely chopped (pressure cooked) pieces of mulch on top (about 3ml thick) and then a layer of damp vermiculite (2cm) 13. left the box in a warm dark spot for 3 days to let the mycelium grow a bit more then chucked it in the fridge for the night 14. during the day it is placed outside in a damp shaded area under some trees and at night it goes back in the fridge for 8 hours
pic of box so far:
Anybody have any advice on areas of improvement so far and for the future of this experiment? it is about 12 degrees at night at the moment but in the next few weeks it should be 5-8. Oh yeah and i know this is an extremely hard grow but even though this is my first i am quite positive about it, its got good vibes so far will keep posting on the progress EVEN if it fails

after several failed attempts to cultivate P. ovoideocystitiata, I've come to the conclusion that they(and many woodlovers)just won't fruit from a sterile sub. There is something to do with the bacteria that it actually needs. You may find you need a casing layer of nonsterilized sub to get it to fruit. Thats just my understanding and thought I would pass it along

yeah thanks for the advice, i forgot to add to the procedure that the vermiculite was soaked in coffee (the water bit) and was not sterilized. i also heard that they need grass as part of their growth, something to do with the roots...?

i love your outlook of experimenting... even if it fails. a lot of people dont get learning is trial and error. and what works for you just may not work for somebody else

If it all turns to shit you can just spawn to woodchips and plant it in the garden, and make your own outdoor patch.

4 nights of cold exposure and no pins but still early days, mycelium is still growing slowly. still visualise subs growing out of the vermiculite and the intense happyness it will bring

looks good man! As soon as i am able to get some p. sub spores i am planning to use a similar method to you, only i was thinking of using a mixture of peat, vermiculite and limestone as the casing layer. any thoughts on this?
I have one question though, what does the layer of cardboard do apart from holding moisture?

i honestly wouldn't have a clue but it was part of some cardboard tek i decided to wack in, helps the mycelium or something..? well i am just taking a stab in the dark for a casing layer, vermiculite was there so i used it, dont reckon theyd be too fussy as it would be dirt in the wild

Fair enough, I've heard of quite a few different people using cardboard and it's worked for them so i guess it must do something.
I would be very interested to see how your grow turns out, so please keep posting! It will be very helpful for me when i start mine

still no sign of pinning but the mycelium has increased rapidly over the extra layer of wood i put on it in step 12. probably still wont fruit for another week but i have recently read that the mycelium needs to establish itself for 9 months before it has any chance of fruiting which counts this out by 3-4 months! Still hoping for a good result

The mycelium has suddenly spread up through the vermiculite and is looking quite promising now.....

i have now classified this as a FAIL but it did fully colonize the casing layer and im gonna see how long it takes to actually fruit (few more months)

okay, fully given up on the indoor attempt, the block was like a mycelium brick so ive buried it in the backyard and hoping the 5 degree nights chill it into action
