Did you really mean to post that to me?  Your post says "Re: pinophile".

pumping humidity and fresh air into a tub isnt rocket science. a caveman could do it.

it's just dialing it in by the seat of your pants that can be hard for a noob. i can look at my substrate's surface and tell if it needs more fresh air, more humidity, etc. and that comes from experience. a hygrometer is not going to be able to tell you anything except that "yup its humid in there (DUH) "

getting everything to balance out correctly takes time and know how.

be prepared for a crappy first harvest if you choose to jump straight into an automated setup. but dont count on it, you could get lucky and find your homeostasis in the first couple of days.

I tried to setup a fully automated grow once, it was pretty sweet actually and I had a ton of fun.

However, from now on I'm using Shotgun   The only automation I'd like with that setup is an auto-mister and lighting, which can be automated with a timer fairly easily.

I've not yet decided how to do the auto-misting, I'm tempted to use an ultrasonic fogger I have.

Ah thank you all for this information, especially MiceHelium nad Pinophile for their first hand knowledge of the frogger, and to Nibin for his very nice break down of my plan haha. Very big help. A huge break down on cost effectiveness and everything. I live in the mountains and it is pretty cold here, 55F at night, keep it at like 65 inside. So heat is a very big deal, the automated humidity just sounded nice as well. So, i suppose i will buy my self an analog temp/humidity gauge for about 10 bucks, and just keep it simple to gain a little more hands on experience before i automate it.I just want to be able to keep them at the perfect conditions, from the moment of inoculation till harvest. Ill probably use DrofRock's Hyrbid Terrarium just because its basically a monotube with an air pump hooked up to it, which seems a little better. and maybe a heating blanket to keep some heat on them, and ill just fiddle with it.Seems like a fire hazard though. Does anyone know of a relatively cheap heat source i could use to fight the mountain air, but that wont set my place on fire?

I live in the mountains too, right on the Canada border, and it's been dropping below freezing every night here since late August.  In a month or two it will be below zero until spring.

I just run a wood stove, and we keep a bucket of water boiling on it all winter for ambient humidity.  I'd suggest a shotgun terrarium, and place it near a bright window.  The sun will warm it up during the day, and it will naturally cool off at night, which is a major pinning trigger.  A steady-state temperature isn't what you want.

During colonization, your cakes will be just fine on an upper bookshelf.  It's generally a bit warmer near the ceiling.  You'll have much better success if you keep it simple.  I've colonized substrates in 40 degree temperatures.  It takes longer, but they do colonize.  Don't create fire hazards for yourself.

Here's how I did my automated setup.  It works like a champ and is 100% automated.  I don't have to touch a thing until I harvest.

I took a large tub, can't remember the exact size, drilled 4 large holes in the top sides on both sides of the tub.  I stuffed that full of polyfill.

Next I took a smaller tub, and a fan I bought from Walmart and cut out a hole big enough to fit the fan and screwed the fan into the lid.  I cut a small square in the bottom of this tub and a square the same size in the lid of the larger tub.  I bolted the smaller tub to the top of the large tub, and in between I put an air conditioner filter.  So filtered air can flow between the two squares I cut.

I drilled a hole on the top of the large tub on the right, big enough to fit the hose of the ZooMed Fogger and installed that.  I also bought the controller that monitors humidity and temp to plug the fogger into.  I have a space heater that heats the room if it falls below 77, I plugged that into the controller also.

I plugged the fan that is installed in the smaller tub into a timer.

I had an Aerogarden once that I no longer use.  But I still use the hood that has the lights.  It has a timer on it also for the lights.

Voila!  What you have is a fully automated FC.  It keeps the humidity up, temp constant, fans for 10 min every 3 hours, and provides light when it's suppose to.

You really dont need a temperature sensor if you are indoors. If its comfortable for you then its just fine for the mushies right? any one wanna back me up?

Sorry i realize this thread is dead

Well, if you want a machine where you have to put stuff into and get shrooms out - why don't you just buy some?

EDIT: You fucking enticed me into posting in a 2 year old thread.
