Re: The Official Woodlovers Thread [Re: Tweeq] * 9

Some updated pictures of my outdoor patches.
The azures patch is in a shadier place and the woodchips are colonized further.

The cyan patch seems to need more time to fully colonize.
Some animals have digged out a clump of woodchips.
I have taken it into my hand and noticed that there are already pins forming.

This weekend temperatures are rising up to 28 °C / 82 °F.
For this reason i covered both patches with some more wet leaves after taking the pictures.
Not sure if that was a good idea or not.

Not argueing with your experience here btw. However

That is not my experience at all. Every clone I took has been prolific. IWL, Cyan, Azure.

In every case I was lucky to have good source clusters to clone from. I think it depends on what you have to work with. But if you ever run into that dream cluster of massive fruits I highly recommend cloning the best fruits out of the cluster. It hasn't let me down yet.

I've never tried cloning single WL fruits so I cannot speak on that.

:whathesaid:
My best azurescens patches were also from a clone. And cyan clones also produced good. Although cyans are very prolific anyhow.

I get your (cron's) point though, they do well from multispore, so why 'waste' a year?
But to say cloning is a crapshoot... In my (limited) experience clones outperform ms by a good margin.

Yeah my first clone of cyans made lots of very teeny fruits lol 😂 and my azures were just meh , cyans have always done well it was just the size that pissed me off 😂

Wow!
I sincerely appreciate your dedication and thoroughness! Very nice set up capturing nearly all growth parameters. As I was reading I was thinking of bobwastaken and his fridge set up from years past. Then “boom” there he is contributing. I took a long break from the site and cultivation but now that I’m retired I’m looking forward to getting back into it and being inspired by the likes of you. I was trained as a (social) scientist and taught research methods and statistics for decades. The particular methods / techniques of biological science are sometimes different but the basic principles of systematic observation and comparison are common essentials.
Keep up the good work!
Here is my first “indoor” Ps. Cyanescens grow just for fun. I use quotation marks because most of it was indoors but I did place it outside from time to time:

I planted grass seed in the casing to help create a micro climate for pinning.  I have also used alfalfa seeds / seedling to good effect with Ps. Allenii.

Sunydayze and i say congrats on the retirement. Hope you have  been well?

Decided to start introducing local soft woods into my patches. They didn't approve. Usually I can dig a bit and see them run. Guess it's time to make spawn.

Do I need to do anything special to take a print from outdoor woodlovers? I'm guessing it will be dirty AF. I saw that hob does dry pasteurization using a dehydrator.

What about taking a clone? Anything special besides using water agar? I thought I read something about using peroxide to help with wild clones?

You might also consider the following technique for a cleaner wild print: procure a cookie or cake cooling rack, swab down the area you’ll place your cap with alcohol (both sides), place a fresh cap that you’ve cut from the stipe with a clean blade on the rack, place the cap/rack over tin foil) place a clean bowl over the cap on the rack. Place in an area free of drafts. For extra assurance place a clean damp towel over the whole affair (or place in a clean tub and put a lid on it.  Getting a clean clone from wild samples can be quite difficult. Choose younger fruits, consider swabbing the exterior with peroxide or alcohol then immediate follow with Josex’s needle cloning technique…
Best of luck to you. 👍

Feeling all the love in here.
I’m currently in Portugal on my first ever trip to Europe. Pretty cool. Headed home via Amsterdam and Iceland in about a week!

I've said this before somewhere but I'll say it again just in case:

When starting a woodlover from spores (esp. Azzies), don't be fooled and take the first good growth you see on the plate. Wait for at least a week, ideally 2 weeks longer and new sectors will appear. The mycelium that first emerges might be vigorous, but will fail the test of time IME. It's the fast and healthy sectors that appear afterwards that perform well in the real world.

Wish you all the best of luck in the coming WL season

Shit, I guess I should start to keep an eye on my pots here soon.  Also time to find excuses to visit my friend who's garden I have festooned with azzies

What's the warmest night temps you've seen azzies fruit at? Mine started pinning when we got a couple 10 c nights with most nights being 12-14c. Days have been 20-30c

I honestly haven't paid that much attention.  It seems to be triggered more when the day temps start dropping into the 50sF and there is consistent moisture.

We've been watering with a hose, but day temps are way above 50f. Night temps were in the right range though.

The good news is that we should hopefully have at least another month of good temps before things get cold.

My patch only has fruited on the edge so far which is a bit disappointing. I'm curious if the thickness of the bed plus the mycelium is generating too much heat to pin yet. Only time will tell.

I think next year I might mix in soil or coir and lay it thinner

I too water with a hose, but I find a humid and cool environment in general help more.  It seems you’ve found a great phenotype for your environment 👍

Finally! Some action. Cyanescens isn't doing anything anywhere. But here is a lone azurescens, checking if the coast is clear. I didn't give this bed the love it deserved in the past years, maybe it's just a lone azurescens.

And my very first subaeruginosa, from a wild Aussie print. Very excited.
