If I understand this right we should make sure the water is alkaline after boiling it and before pouring it. That suggests we should add some gypsum to the water even if we are using coir only.
Am I understanding this right?
And following from this, would dunking a cake in 60c alkaline water after it's first flush help against trich or would that 60c damage the mycelium?

total newb here btw.

Although I started here, most TCs will agree that boiling/cooking your coco coir is not necessary. If you are using something like Coco Bliss or anything of that nature that does not have trichoderma intentionally put in it all you have to add to it is normal tap water.

Dunking a cake in 60°C water would beyond a doubt damage if not kill the mycelium.

I would like to point out that this Tek is over 8 years old, and we have learned a lot since then.

I always bucket teked my coir and verm and wrapped the buckets in flannel cotten sleeping bags so they where still 160°f 4 hrs later. Coir still has nutrients in it, albeit not much, but still lotta calcium and potassium and other trace nutrients. Sure you can probably never do this and be fine..maybe. But I and other TCs have seen and some have pics of mold growing right on just coir sitting in a bucket

I've followed this tek for years, I agree it works, but I've also been told by TCs it is not necessary. So I was just passing that information along.

I use boiling water to soften the coir and aid in breaking down the bigger chunks. If nothing else, that might make it useful to others.

As a newb I'll stick to boiled until I am more confident.

But, boiled or not, the article suggests making the water alkaline is a good idea for every time we need water. From hydrating substrate to misting.
Would that be a useless step?

Water becomes acidic when exposed to oxygen. So even if it was alkaline originally it would just become acidic later. That kind of small acidity doesn't hurt your grows with cubes.

Re: BOD's Bucket TEK for Coir substrate (an adaptation of the elementary coir tek by Damion5050) [Re: rumfor69]

It does but that is negligible. If you mist water with a ph of 8 it isn't going to drop to 6 before touching your substrate.
According to the article high alkalinity prevents trich growth. I feel like that is a good idea.

My thinking is that if you pay attention to water PH levels on all stages trich gets less of a chance. Spawning to bulk is not a clean process and from what I understand most cakes eventually succumb to trich even if there's still a few flushes in there. The grow kit that got me into this was a slab of colonized substrate with some grain in it, after the third flush it went green.
So that article got me thinking that hydrating substrate, dunking cakes, and misting, should all be done with water with a PH higher then 8.
Mycelium apparently is much more flexible liking pretty much ph ranges from 5 to around 109. But I have no idea if that is true for cube mycelium.

I'm not just a shrooming newb, chemistry is also new to me. Shooting in the dark here unhindered by any practical knowledge.
So my question remains, do experienced shroomers think the extra effort is worth it? (that effort would be buying a proper ph meter, learning how to keep water ph consistent, etc.)

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9467589/ ;
I think I'll just try it, These links suggest Trich goes dormant when PH is over 7 and that various myceliums are absolutely fine with it. Imma guessing cubes won't care either.

If you're just doing coir for cubes you'd be wasting money. I just dump it in a recycled pickle bucket from a restaurant and put the lid on. Stays hot for hours. If you're really worried you could wrap it in a bath towel or blanket and it would probably add another couple hours of heat to it

I use one of these for my coir/sub-

https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Insulated-Portable-Retention-Heavy-Duty/dp/B09HN1BPJT?th=1

Not because I need to hold the heat (I just use room temp water), but because I do 2 or 3 bricks at a time and it's big enough for that, but it holds heat really well if that's what your looking for. And you might already have a cooler you can use.

Currently just doing cubes but definitely plan on doing pans and culinary ones as well so I do want something in my toolkit for pasteurizing.

Huh I think this might be the way to go, "sub making cooler". Last time I made substrate, my bucket sucked in due to the pressure diff. Do you know if your cooler would hold it's shape/form while cooling down because if it does this is definitely the way to go. Container and insulator in one. I was just worried I'd destroy it by throwing hot liquid in and the cooling down deforming the inside.

It'll be fine. They are designed to hold hot stuff too and won't collapse as stuff cools. And the lids don't form a perfect seal so the pressure can equalize as it cools.

Is the type of coir important? Here it comes as coir or "coir peat". As far as I can tell, the "coir peat" is still just coir, only chopped or ground up.
