You just have too much going on there, try to use less of everything to encourage growth that is identifiable rather than this mass of mycelium.

Dang it, I figured as much. This was inoculated with a spore print. Thanks!

Give it a while to grow out more, take a transfer to cabin to get clean growth.

Thanks!  Will clean up and transfer for my clarity.  Got a bit more than a drop when plating some liquid culture so it got a bit messy.

Thoughts on in the PE plate with the low fuzz?  That was a transfer.

Overgrown to the edges and so tough to say if mold is on there too.  I would take another transfer to be sure.

Thanks for the feedback!

That one is definitely more of a project culture.  My teacher had me go spore syringe to grain jar so it probably isn't the best culture. I sampled it grain to agar and would like to save it, but have other healthy PE.

Forgot about that last ochra plate for a few weeks. Found these little guys today.

Thanks, Beef!

Your posts have been incredibly helpful as I start this journey.  I appreciate your balanced takes, leaning in to what works, and helping this community to have great discussions.

I just punished my first subs today!!  Looking brown and ready to clown.

Yeah I lament Strong Belwas not being in the show, but we also might have dodged a bullet from him being done dirty.  Also keeps a bit of mystique to my username preference

New to Agar and ready to transfer to grain. Got these plates out today and not sure what is going on. This is the second transfer to plates, and it looked really good a week ago. What is going on here?

Hey I'm back at it after a 10 yearish hiatus. These are my best looking T1 plates after starting with spores. How are these looking to you guys? do you think after they fill out I can send them to grain? Really just trying to get some tubs going to get some clones to move forward with. I will do another transfer if you guys are seeing something my untrained eyes are not.

I have some T2s I've taken from other plates. And a BUNCH of other stuff going. Kinda went a little over board, but I've been trying to get my technique locked in again.

If anyone is interested I have KSSS going and have been transferring those. I also have some PE plates I swabbed and some Hillbilly that I started with MSS as well that I just did some transfers on today. Also have some yeti swab plates that have yet to show any signs of growth.

I apologize for the cloudy agar. I'm using BRF as the nutrient. I'm Thinking of switching to DME for clarity because the opacity is kind of annoying me.

Also any tips on taking clear concise agar photos would be greatly appreciated. Thank you if you read through my rambling.

Lighting and contrast.

Sometimes backlighting, sometimes front lighting with a dark background and then I'll angle the plate to reduce glare, sometimes I even use a UV flashlight.

It usually takes two hands.  Sometimes I've even had my partner hold a plate so I can lay on the floor and snap a shot

Everyone loves the grass shots I take, but this is my favorite picture.  Love these little folks.

Thanks for the tips. I will try giving them a shot. I also think the clear agar solution seems to help with the contrast a bit. The BRF agars cloudiness is starting to bug me.

Yeah, clear on white is better than cloudy on white as far as contrast.

Also helps with back lighting.

If you like the BRF plates though, what I would suggest is boiling brown rice in water for five minutes, run the water through a coffee filter.

That's basically grainwater agar, and when I unwrap a stack I'll take a photo of some of mine that was  heavily filtered.  It's slightly yellow/pink but not cloudy.

But this is the low nutrient mix.  Like 1:4 grain water.  My others are 1:1 so quite a bit darker.

Yeah, lol, I remember Darkstar.  I'd never trade all the amazing thinking about ASOIAF and talking with friends I've done, but also repeatedly give up hope of the series finishing.

To keep it relevant I have plates of SNAPE, Toque9, PE, and Ghost I should be able to get rolling to spawn one each week for the next month.  Lost some early tubs to contam, but those were spore to grain grows that a friend with some out dated knowledge advised me on to get started.  Looking forward to growing from these more vigorous cultures and doing my first agar to grain.

Going to try this next time I prep some agar. Thanks tree frog, I appreciate you.

For sure!

If you boil longer it will be stronger.  Which is why I end up diluting mine pretty heavily.  Because it comes from my popcorn prep.

But if you want to make a lot of plates, you can boil longer and then dilute it with water to stretch it out.

There's probably a prep specifically for brown rice posted somewhere, but I would suggest just playing with it and tracking your results personally.  So you know what works well for you.
