AGAR?S FAST PINT SUPER CAKES ~ WITHOUT A PC
    #5397786 - 03/14/06 04:14 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Based on the assumption that the user has the ability to:

Maintain a fairly clean working environment
(and, in-part work fairly fast with hot items)

Make a healthy LC.

Has a source of a few pounds of well weather aged h/poo.
(see VARIBLE section for substitutes)

Can grind either brown rice, wbs, or rye to a sand like consistency.
(coffee grinder, or blender)

Has a microwave.

Has Micropore tape.

Has chunky vermiculite.

Has Coco Coir.

Has wide-mouth pint (sanitized) jars & lids.
(see VARIBLE section for substitutes)

Has aluminum foil, coffee filters & rubber bands.

Has rubbing alcohol.

Has a large pot, or vegetable steamer.

JAR LID PREPERATION

Simply drill a ? or 3/8 hole in the lids center.
Cover the hole with Micropore tape On both sides of the lid.

THE MIX.

4 parts chunky vermiculite.
4 parts shredded h/poo
1 part ground brown rice, or wbs, or rye
1 part hydrated coco coir.
(see VARIABLES section for substitute alternatives)

Add all ingredients to a glass bowl, add water until mixture is fully saturated.
Mix all ingredients together - well.
Test moisture level by hand.
If you can pick up a handful & it doesn?t drip.
But, with a very gentle squeeze, it does lightly drip.
The moisture level is good to go.

THE MICROWAVE

Place loaded bowl, with a plate or saran wrap over the top of it in the microwave.
Microwave 3 minutes
(or until content STEAMS)
Object of micro-waving the mixture is to pre-heat the mix.
(less steaming time)

LOADING JARS

Remove bowl from microwave (warning - hot).
Fluff up the nutrient mixture with sanitized fork, spork or spoon, to the largest volume possible.
With the sanitized fork, spork, or whatever - GENTLY fill the jars ? full.
DO NOT COMPACT THE MIXTURE.
(you want the mixture as fluffy as possible)

Add the jar lid & ring
(lid reversed,  upside down)
Leave lids ? or ? turn loose.
Cover the lids & ? the jar tightly with aluminum foil.
(so any splashing hot water doesn?t enter them)

THE POT

Large pot, with lid.
Place a spacer, (trivet, plate or whatever) in the pot bottom.
(so jars do NOT contact pot bottom)
Fill pot with water until jars are setting IN the water about an inch deep.
Bring pot to a gentle boil.
(not a rolling boil, as that splashes water around in the pot))
Place lid on pot.
(if it is a light lid, place something heavy on it, to help retain steam)
Steam jars 1 hour.

COOLING THE JARS.

Remove jars from pot
(use oven mitts)
Screw lids on firmly
(without removing aluminum foil).
Place jars in a clean, dry, secure place to cool overnight.
(from 8 to 12 hours)

INOCULATION

Fill syringe with LC.
Replace syringe cap.
Shake syringe violently
(to break up & disperse mycelium in it)
Have some small squares of Micrpore tape cut & sitting in a shallow dish, soaked in alcohol.
Remove a/foil.
Uncap syringe.
Keep needle wrapped in alcohol soaked gauze pad, at all times (as best possible).
Insert syringe needle directly through Mircopore tape covered hole, in the lid.
Squirt LC solution into the jar content, in 5 separate squirts.
One down the center, swivel syringe & one squirt in all four (4) corners of the jar.
Total ml per jar is from 2.5 to 3 ml.
Cover the inoculation hole with a piece of alcohol saturated Micropore tape.
(use two, if you prefer a double thickness)
Cover jar lid with lysol sprayed double coffee filters.
(held down tightly with a rubber band)

INCUBATION

Incubate in a secure, clean, dark, warm (76 to 84F) place.

VARIABLES
If you do not have a h/poo source.
You can replace the h/poo with very finely chopped wheat straw.
(suggest boiling it, to help degrade it?s waxy coating)

You can also replace the h/poo with high fiber garden compost.
(not from a store bought bag, from a compost pile)

You can use microwave Deli or ZipLock containers, instead of glass jars.

Yes, you can fill the plastic containers, then microwave them until just steaming.
No, you cannot get by just microwaving them.
As that will usually throw off the mixture moisture content.

Damn, I could've done this if I just waited a few more days. I just prepared 16 pf jars. I have almost all the other ingrediants you mentioned here as well.

Very nice Agar, as usual. My only question is do you use these to spawn or do you fruit them like cakes? I think if spawning to hpoo It would produce roughly the same results as grain, but how do they do as cakes? Better than PF cakes im sure, but to what extent?

Nice write up as always Bro!! As we know LC only requires boiling to sterilize that combined with peroxided grains makes for one easy tek also, no PC required either.

If I "did" cakes seriously, I would fruit out pints as cakes.

If I wanted to use this TEK for "spawn", to BULK SUBSTRATE.

I would do it it in QUART JARS.

Just increase the steaming time 50% & double the LC inoculate amount.

Preheating in the microwave is a good idea. Especailly with larger jars where the centre of the jar is insulated from heating during steaming.

If the jars are prepared to correct moisture content and weighed. Then they can be microwaved and the lost moisture can be calculated by the subsequent lowering of weight. This can be added back with LC.

I have also never had success with steamed grain flours, many do here, some don't. Nobody seems to have a problem with rice flour though.

This looks like a really good method, i think that im going to try fully sterlizing the medium within the microwave

then putting the mixture into bread pans to add the spores.. leaving a layer of vermiculite on top and covering with some tinfoil

lemme know what you think

I would just have the container you sterilized in to colonize in there. And then in a clean place case/spawn it in the bread pan.

Kitchen microwaves cannot fully sterilize something like this.
Certainly a microwave creates heat, and steam.

What it lacks is PRESSURE.

No kitchen microwave exists with internal pressure capability of 15 psi.

Such a thing could not even be described as a microwave oven.
Because, moving towards that psi, it would have already blown itself apart, scattering what would appear to be bomb debris for considerable distances. Not to mention, embedding shrapnel in people, walls, or whatever else was nearby.

Yes, you can get some microwaved containers to colonize, and fruit.
The problem is you cannot do it consistently.
The variables of microwaving make the method erratic.
That is what "agar" related to me about them.
He abandoned these tests as not being worthwhile.
