I'd cut the ready ones near the base with scissors and let the others grow.

I never keep the bottom part with verm on it with any variety, I chop them with scissors just above that, even if I twist out that part to harvest. Even though it's throwing away some actives, so what. It's saving the best parts with no grit.

Sometimes I grow a flush, then flip the whole cake into a new shoebox, water the hell out of it, and grow on the old bottom, which is now the new top.

Recommended practice for harvesting used to be harvesting just before they open up. (like a decade ago or more, especially in books.)

Then they won't have spores all over, but you actually get more weight and same (maybe more) potency letting them open.

I think a lot of people went to "let them fully open" because it looks cool in photos. haha.

Since you're learning so fast, maybe look into starting to clone. If you pick the best cluster, clone it, and grow future boxes from that, it will all come up more closely together in time, be more consistent potency and look. (Though look can still vary a little bit in clones)

You're doing really well and I gave you a good rating because you're doing so well, even though you started this thread two months ago with this:

Are you putting a full myco quart of spawn in each box? Those look a little small and also pretty deep down in the tub. Most people put at least an inch more total in there so they're higher up in the box. (Your other box of same variety on this page looked like bigger shrooms though, can't see in that pic how low the substrate is since you're got a canopy!)

Even with same amount of spawn, with a little more coir and verm I guess they'd be bigger, since it would take a little longer to fully colonize the box, which is has to do before mushrooms happen.

I think extra coir and verm, even though it's not really a nutrient, would give mycelium more time to organize, which might make bigger shrooms. Just a guess though.

I do cut the ends with coir after twist and pull and toss them, but I have been harvesting the whole tub, might try to pick just the ones sporulating next time.

Yeah, I don't harvest when they start to open, but I would like to harvest before they are covered with spores, I admit, I like a good picture before harvest and they look pretty similar when covered in spores

I've been doing Beefs punisher tek after first flush, now I am doing a lighter version of that and floating lotus, but I'll try the "flip tek" with the second x7x+ tub, probably tomorrow.

Will do, I have taken some clones of Ochra, Riptide and Toque F8 and will probably do it with every variety I grow. The first tub with x7x+ didn't have something obvious standing out, even tho they are gorgeous shrooms, and I have 3 more tubs with x7x+ going so I'm sure I'll find a good candidate to clone :awesomenod:

No, every time I start with a new variety I'll do 8,5 fl oz of spawn to a 5qt mini mono with a ratio between 1:2+1 and up to 1:4+1. Just coir.

I have only posted one of my x7x+ tubs so both pictures are the same tub 24 hours apart. That tub has 1:4+1 ratio and I was a little surprised the fruits where that small, might have been low on moisture :begger:

Now that I have fruits, and more important, spores, I'll find a good clone from one of the four tubs with x7x+ and test in another 5qt, but I'll also go back to the original plate(that's been through CS, just to be sure it's clean) and do a full myco qt in a 16qt tub with the same 1:4+1 ratio.

For me it seems it's mostly genetic, but I'm sure I could get better at field capacity and dialing in my tubs, and of course, use more spawn. It's winter here and humidity is pretty low inside the house. Pictures below are the second x7x+ tub and ESS, they where sent to bulk the same day and have the same ratio and tub.

Thank you for the comprehensive answer, it really helps me and I really appreciate you seeing and telling me I am getting better, I put a lot of hours in this hobby even tho a lot of it is reading.

Gave it the punysher tek(my light version of Beef's punisher tek) and floating lotus. I chickened out on flippin it(sorry Nektar61), it just looked to pretty around the edges and bottom, but I will try it with one of the other two, promise :awesomenod:

Beautiful tub, Kloakk:rockon:

Spawned a 24oz stropharia alcis to each of these 6qt boxes.  Moose dung in both, but one has a peat casing and one has a coir topping.
The smell of the spawn was WEIRD.  It had all the oddball,  somewhat sharp umami of shitake, but not as pungent.  If you can imagine shitake, an exotic polymer, and blood having a lovechild, you'll have no issues imagining it.  Intriguing.

Had this questionable cinctulus sitting around for a while,  but after seemingly overcoming a spot of mold a week and a half ago,  I figured I'd toss it in some extra moose dung for funsies. Will definitely produce some more good spawn later and do a full attempt.  Pivoting back to Neoxalapensis now that I got the s. alcis on bulk.

First cube shoebox (12 qt / 11.3 L, spelt 1:4 coir) pinning. Second (whole brown rice 1:3 coir) is forming primordia.

I cased a little spelt that was inoculated with a wedge from the germ plate (something I don't normally do). It performs rather poorly, but makes the exact thing it was supposed to do: a cluster for cloning. I don't intend to clone anything as I have more than enough projects already. Just wanted to demonstrate how I used to grow cubes. But it itches somewhere. I'm a sucker for nice clusters.

Edit: ahhh rhizorider I'm so jealous

Hey everyone.
First time grower here. I started on 6th January with some PE spores on standard BRF cakes. It seemed like forever before the jars colonised and thought they had stalled. After a quick search I wondered if there was CO2 build up and inverted the jars to let it out. Eventually they restarted and birthed them in a staggered way as each of the 12 seemed to fully develop.
Now the first 5 have started to produce and I am so excited.

I placed the cakes upside down on the wider end, but the baby shrooms seemd to be growing from the bottom, so I have now flipped them and seen 3 other cakes are developing babies.

Thanks for all the great advice here.

Bob
