Keep an eye on that top right corner... how does it look below the surface right there?

The top right looks fine. I just took the lid off, wasn't able to get a picture though. Smells literally like mushrooms. Not a bad odor at all. Do I take the tape off?

edit: Sorry I just looked, not in reply to this specific picture

Into a dehydrator, highest temperature it goes, full blast 24 hours.  From there they go directly into mason jars with the two piece lids and get sealed.  No opening up and peeking, it lets in moisture.

When should you buy a flow hood?

I’ve been taking this little hobby pretty seriously and I have a few uses for a flow hood. But a good ones expensive lol.

How many just run a SAB and are just fine?

I’ve ran like 15-20 plates with a Sab no contams but my last 3 plates  contamed bad. Made me wanna max my credit cards out and get a flow hood 😂

I know 3/23 isn’t a bad number but it made me realize how one tiny mistake can ruin everything. I feel like whatever this green mold spore is is also inside my sab. And I don’t want that so I might just make an entirely new one 😂 I’m sure I can sterilize it and I’m being dramatic but 🤮

Pic of said green mold that plagued my plates:

Is a flow hood required for 100% or close to success rate? Or can you get good with working in a SAB and not deal with contams?

SAB knocks down contaminants from the air somewhat. the air still has to be reasonably clean and acceptable laziness is proportional to how much shit is in the air to begin with. fiddle with longer settling times first (30m is a good place to start after loading then slow reduce until you find a good balance of waiting to working) then obvious things like dust all over your work, gloves, air currents from outside, awkward box construction and whether you live in squalor then consider making a box fan air purifier if your results still aren't good. some places have insane amounts of microbes in the air that isn't easy to correct.

shroomery hates air purifiers as "unnecessary" but the people who tend to stick with cultivation tend never to have issues to begin with. air filtration is standard in microbiology labs or we'd grow nothing but mold in front of a bunsen. not to suggest that a box fan with a H13 filter is as good as a well designed micro lab.

everything else --bleach soaked towels, aerosols sprays, disinfectants and mercurial notions of skill-- are mythology.

24hrs as normal then store in heat sealed mylar bags (or glass jars if you're rich) with a desiccant package. don't bother with the vacuum, it will just turn your shrooms to dust and add another failure point. dry and cool like a packet of chips and you're right as rain until the last syllable of recorded time.

people forget that most plastics are slightly permeable to water vapour and shrooms are hygroscopic. quod erat demonstrandum they go floppy after a while and people don't realise it was because they were stored improperly. same basic reason vacuum packed or dime baggie shrooms tend to fail in weird ways eventually.

misting the inside of the sab  properlywith slightly soapy water is very recommended! then wipe the top for visibility and let it settle for 15 min or more
what was airbound should have settled or got stuck to the moist walls. dont move too fast, dont introduce dirty air, dont create vibration or hit the sab while working, and keep your moves smooth and properly timed (as short as possible) and dont move around above the opened plate or jar. keep your hands on the side.. good luck, should work with some practice

Hello everyone, long time lurker and finally decided to try my own grow.
My spawn turned out great, all white completely colonized, smelled great.
I'm following the SFF shoebox tek on here, with the substrate just under field capacity. My shoeboxes are about a week in and I noticed some brown spots on the colonizing white mycelium, can't find much on brown contamination so I figured I would post here to find out. I will note the shoeboxes seem like they are over hydrated, maybe my temp is too high in the room causing that so I did turn the space heater down a bit. Any help is appreciated.

What process did you follow for grain prep and inoculation?

A flow hood is 100% not required for plate work.  If you're getting contamination it is a skill/technique issue and not an equipment issue.  Clean out your SAB with soap and warm water and there will be no more spores in it.  Nothing more is needed.

I know it's tempting to get new equipment to try and solve problems, but with something as basic and small as plates I think it's better to focus on your technique and practice until you get it right.  We need to learn to fix our problems by problem solving and adapting to situations.  If we give into the cargo cult of cultivation equipment that has gripped reddit, fakebook, and yourube we will never grow in skill or solve our problems.

I know they are frowned upon here but they were brown rice bags like uncle bens put into zip locks. They seemed fine before spawn to bulk, I will attach some pictures of what they looked like. They were inoculated with .1cc of liquid culture in a SAB
Is the brown spot mold, or some of those white fluffy spots mold too?

The 2*2 hoods are pretty affordable on Amazon.  If you live in the U.S., I would get one soon if you can afford it and know you want one.  The price is likely to go way up and with price gouging, I doubt they'll go back down if and when the tariffs get lifted.

That said, all the advice about SABs is solid.  Hoods are really nice if doing bags, but really not necessary for cubes.

How do you mean no peeking, i have to check out are they still dry after i put them first time? They turned bendy last time, that's why i afraid this time.

Can you please explain a little bit more?
