Looks like time to harvest. But should I wait a bit more if I want to take some prints?

Highest amount of spawn to sub ratio was probably a 1:1 or 1:1.5. I got this idea from PGT'S video on how to S2B and he said just eyeball it. Looked like he barely used any sub at all so I did the same. I try to standardize my quarts of spawn and sub by measuring out 500g for each quart jar. I just made my first shoebox tonight of iceberg and decided to up the ratio to 1:2.75. Almost 1:3 but I wanted to leave space for fruiting. I've only ever used liquid culture. Don't have spores to go back to. Guess I'll have to learn agar.

So save the blobs during harvest and treat them like fruits. Should I remove everything all at once? Or remove anything close to a torn veil and leave pins to mature? Should I case again after harvest and soak?

Do yourself a favor and unplug from PGT. Not someone you want to look towards for advice.

You want your ratio to be 1:2-1:4, generally speaking. If the spawn is clean. I stick to 1:3 for most applications. Compress your substrate and give it a top layer as well. Very firmly compress it.

Yes pick your blobs, those are keepers. Given how little sub you used, I’d cross my fingers and rehydrate, but I wouldn’t expect much more from this grow. Pick it all and chuck it is what I’d do

With these starry night apes Ive tried 1:1, and 2:1.
Both with a pseudo casing, and 50/50+ casing. Ive sent to fruiting immediately after spawn to bulk and also waited for colonization to introduce fc. No matter what I keep getting the blobs!

You do not have any isolates.  You could transfer 80 times and not have it.  Remove the concept of isolate from your mind and just focus on having a clean culture.

Why are there a dozen wedges in each jar?  Just carefully transfer one very clean wedge in and leave it at that.  You're inviting contamination with so much activity over an open jar.

I'm going to do this in all caps so it is very clear:

SHROOMS DO NOT DEFEAT CONTAMINATION OF ANY KIND.

Once your plate, spawn, or spawned sub is contaminated it is contaminated.  It's done, yeet it into the sun.  The only contaminated grain I spawn is bacterial, and then I top fruit.

Shrooms do not defeat mold.

Shrooms do not defeat bacteria.

CLEAN SPAWN ONLY.

The way I like to think of it is this:

Bacteria have around a 2 billion year evolutionary head start on fungus, so they're always going to win. Bad fungus like molds only have to create single cells to sporulate, but mushrooms have to create an entire body to do the same.

This means that the only way for mushrooms to win the race is to have zero competitors.

was looking like a super healthy pin set. Of some hillbilly. Going to make a nice looking canopy.

The spawn appeared to be very clean I'm broke it a few times and it recovered very quickly each time.

The only reason I'm expressing concern is cuz they're so small and immature. So am I just looking at a genetic thing here possibly? Also I want to make clear I provided plenty of Fae my water tub is unmodded with the lid cracked but I'm pretty sure it was cracked enough for a good amount of Fae and the microclimate and surface conditions were absolutely perfect.

So if all of that seems to have been okay am I looking at a genetic thing or could this possibly just be a crappy first flush?

See those fuzzy stipes?  Personally I'd introduce more FAE.

Small fruits are typically genetic.  Second flush might have larger but if you're looking for larger fruits go back to spore.

Listen to this right here. The second half is obviously true too, but I think the first half gets kind of glossed over bc the learning material often shows the more experienced cultivators slicing a whole plate and transferring. Ive been chasing a minor bacterial issue in all of my jars for...idk...months. I did everything I could think of, including inspecting my PC for some random shit that could have probably never been the problem anyway. Im confident that this is where I was fuckin up - too much time with an open jar, too much time trying to transfer 12 wedges while being under pressure to hurry...all of that. Take it slow with the wedges and save yourself the headache, amigo. More inoculation points are meaningless if the jar shits the bed in the end.

I honestly see next to no difference between one small wedge and a whole plate.  Maybe a half a day to a day sooner?  I'd rather have a clean culture.

So when I've got a shoebox like that that's fully blanketed with fruits. do I still do a twist and  pull for Harvest or is this an instance that may better to float it and use a scapal  or knife or something?

I have to disagree on the nats don't eat mold though and I agree on questioning facts (like tea extracts 99% potency bs, which I believed). Generally it's true that mold will win, however in specific circumstances, nats have a good chance of eating or rather killing off competing mold spores. The specific circumstances are that the mold must be in a very isolated space and greatly out-competed by natalensis mycelium. For the poster of the contaminated jars, I'd say it's a no-go. Also competing means that the jars will need a lot longer until they are ready to spawn and in case of evidence of mold that's been succumbed by natalensis myc, it's likely wise to go for top fruiting to maximize success.

The way the process works is that if you for instance have a single grain that sporulated - natalensis will wrap itself around the grain with rhizomorphic growth and the mold will start to lose it's vibrant color, eventually turning completely dull. The problem is that this can take weeks and it makes a lot more sense to figure out what the contamination vector was and make some new spawn.

Natalensis is also the only species that successfully colonized and fruited off of fermented grain for me. Bispo, ttbvi, subtrops - no chance.

I feel that entirely. I can't speak to the speed so much, but after an ungodly amount of effort trying to track this shit down, I will gladly sacrifice a bit of colonization time regardless. Tbh, it's almost a benefit - I've expanded this into what feels like a part time job, so I wouldn't even mind if things slowed down a bit.

Hello All,

I'm brand new here, and only slightly less green when it comes to shroom growing knowledge so please go easy. My girlfriend and I recently purchased an "everything included" grow kit online and it seems fairly self explanatory. One thing I'm confused about though is whether or not to add coco coir (or anything else for that matter) to the substrate that was provided in the kit. Or should I stick only with what was provided in the kit, or is that contingent on the kit type?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
