Nah, you're good. :thumbup:

Best way I've found to limit that potential is to take transfers from the outer most edge and as small a piece as possible.

Temperature and humidity flux can cause switching rhizo and tomentose growth. Agar recipes can have different effects on growth modes as well.

Jumping on the Nats bandwagon and seeing their behavior firsthand. That fuzzy top of theirs makes me continually do double takes. They’re tricky

It looks to me like you have some contam riding along, that translucent layer that spreads ahead of the mycelium on the last 2 pics. I have a plate that looked like it on one side:



You can see how the left side is more stunted and it's more blurry overall, until 2 days ago the same outer edge was visible there, but now the mycelium has outgrown it. Whereas to the right you can see how the myc outgrew it earlier and the leading edges are clean, and looking back towards the center there's more clarity until it hits the edge where contam was also present, where it's as blurry as the left side.

I should grab some transfers already but I'm too lazy to wash my plates... shame on me.

Hey thanks for the help Tormato…I’ve been wondering about the size of my transfers and will definitely give this a try.

Welcome to the fuzz Azure…looking great. 😉 I realise now that Nats were probably not the easiest for me to start out on but glad I’ve stuck with it. Hopefully some fruits in due time!

When plates get to this stage of consolidation (when they've been kicking around a couple weeks and the growth is thick) it's not easy to see everything.  For instance, I can't gauge what that raised area in the first photo is/is from -nor can I tell what's going on in photo 2 @6:00.  They could be fine, and probably are, but if it were me, I'd take a fresh transfer so I could observe the new growth to be sure.

That's fair. The raised area is a slug of solidified agar when I poured. Idk what the 6 oclock is, but it was the freshest growth that hasnt digested the food coloring yet, so theres a dark patch there. Ill keep in mind what you said about the consolidation. Waiting for my ffu to get here (hopefully today) but these plates were fully colonized probably fri or so. Appreciate ya!

Nice.  Yeah - I have a bunch of plates with humps, bumps, and swirls from my constant agar handling misdeeds (not to mention scalpel drags, wedge rolls, etc) that I have to keep track of mentally to gauge their health lol.  Hope your unit arrives today and you get to have some fun with it! :rockon:

Is it normal for mycelium on agar to get some white fuzzy verticality as shown? Kind of an extreme example from a spore that's a few weeks old plus a t1.

Edit: To add on top, how are you guys getting such strong growth on agar? All of mine seems so wispy compared to alot of what I'm seeing. Should I transfer clean growth to a higher nutritional agar? Currently I'm using 1.5% lme. Would upping it to 3% get me that prettier growth?

This is the 'prettiest' one I have currently..

After placing an agar wedge in centre of plate, sometimes initially I get a fanning of little growth around the centre of the transfer but then it seems to come good… is the area of very little growth a sign of bacteria? Plate is looking good but the mycelium seems to be really tight and condensed - is that what you would call overlay type growth?

I'd transfer as far as possible from that certain contam at the bottom and from whatever that is on the left and middle.

So, top right, that rhizo to the right of the end of where you wrote the word "Zaps." I'd transfer tiny pieces there to several plates, maybe 3 or 4.

If you do that, grow it out and post your best of the 4 once it's grown out to about half this big and get feedback.

I think this will need 2 more transfers at least.

I’m a newer hobbyist who jumped in with a lot of enthusiasm, but not a lot of education. I’ve been trying to figure things out on my own, but without a trained eye, it’s hard to know what I’m seeing. I recently started asking some questions and was led here.

I’m hoping someone will look at this plate and tell me if it’s clean, and okay to spawn. There is a yellow brown dot that looks like contam but may be myco metabolites, as I forgot about this plate for several weeks and it’s sat out at room temp most of the summer.
