Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: Bigdogg]

Well I do have the verm already but I am going to lowes anyway so I could check and see if they sell it. Can't imagine they don't.i may just get it to have options.

It's interesting because the original water tub tek by Majhea does use coir but in my first timer thread and in the orginal water tub tek thread there was alot of people saying they were having issues with it and some TCs told me to go with verm and 1 or 2 TCS said coir.

Bigdogg said:
You could use coir as mentioned above and that may work better.

If you have vermiculite and are all set for that route. Roll the wet cake in dry verm, let it set for an hour or 2 then mist it. If you already right away you'll just rinse it off.

Same basic procedure with coir. Rehydrate is with as little water as possible. Wet cake dry Coir, let it set for a bit, then mist.

This is very good info.

Instincually I like the idea of the dry verm and spraying because I can always ask the community if I sprayed enough. But if I go the coir route I could get it to field capacity and still I'd only have to worry about surface conditions.

Certainly something to ponder.

This may sound stupid but can I for example do 1 or 2 cakes in coir and the other 4 in verm to see which one i like best?

Yeah I was dead set on verm but coir may be the right choice here. It's so hard to decide. I think coir is optimal and I can get it to field capacity easy enough I just hope I don't overmist for surface conditions.

In my mind at least it's probably the same difficulty figuring out if I've misted enough.

I may just use verm for a few and the rest coir. So many choices

The part that really gets me about rolling it in vermiculite. Is the vermiculite is supposed to be dry.

With coir I just got that out of a bucket that was filled with boiling water. So I feel like it’s clean.

With the vermiculite, I just have to hope. That’s why I just don’t want to use it for rolling my cakes anymore.

Verm has no nutrition. So, if you are getting contamination it’s already present.

I got the old bag of verb from Fred Meyer and I was pretty convinced it was dirty beforehand. It’s just so dusty.

It’s probably sitting around for a while.
Cooking up a brick, I don’t have to worry about it.

Yeah… I get it. It’s just vermiculite has no nutritional value. So if you are getting contamination, it is likely already present.

I stopped using the dry verb layer, and I stopped having contamination problems.

It is possible. But I cut that out and things have improved dramatically.

Is Fred Meyers a dusty shit hole?
It’s absolutely possible.
I got a nice bag sealed off of Amazon. I just don’t like vermiculite as much as I like coir.

well, I suppose a non nutritive medium could still act as a transport vector. Mold spores could perhaps, catch ride on dry verm. Only germinating after nutes+water are introduced (where the dry and wet layers contact). Dunno, just thinking out loud.

Vermiculite has been used for 35+ years. Why would adding boiling water to coir make it clean?

If your culture is healthy, it should be strong enough to defend against outer contaminants. Especially if it has consolidated and is a clean culture.

You can do whatever you want. Mix Coir and verm and do 1 like that. You might be the first person to do that?

Cour may be the better option. PF was developed back in the late 70's or early 80's. I don't think Coir was as popular or common then. Vermiculite works as a contam barrier in the jar and holds moisture so it was likely used to limit the amount of items needed as well.

Hard to over most on pf cakes as they have such small horizontal surface area. You could dump a glass of water on it and it's mostly going to run off.

If you see big drops or puddles you overdid it. If you see little beads of water don't do anything.

If you see neither most a little.

The real question is why are you misting in the first place? If you are doing cakes, I guess soaking the Verm through misting might be an option but the cake should have enough moisture to start pinning and create a microclimate good enough to form primordia.

I roll dry, let it set to stick on there and then soak. I still have to most a few times especially in the summer with the AC. The air is dry at in my house.

2 cakes in a shoe of that are still producing I had to mist a few times and refill the water. Almost 3/4" evaporated dry in 2 weeks.

I haven't even used coir. I bought a PF kit from the back of a punk rock magazine in the late 90's and did about 4 rounds with it til I figured out there were other ways.

I feel like I need to do a few more trials now. I'm gonna do at least 5 to try and revive some old spores anyway. Maybe I'll just do a full dozen and have fun with some.

Have you noticed a difference with any of the casings?
