for those who have experience with long-term storage of plins in cryovials with sterile water: it's normal for them to turn completly black? - thought this kind of oxidation would need oxigen... starting to doubt if the cryovials are air sealed...

Black would be extremely suspect for agar wedges, but I've never tried it with pins. On wedges, the mycelium stays perfectly white.

But aborted pins tend to turn black.

Any reason you want pins from agar plates rather than vegetative mycelium?

Im fairly certain this is a contaminate that kinda looks like myc, but could someone confirm for me please? Im pretty new with the agar and haven't seen healthy growth with my own eyes yet.

I mean you’re not very close and that looks really Webbie to me. That’s looking very moldy. But I would like a closer picture.

OK
This picture just looks evil. I don’t think there’s anything good in this.

Disorganized Growth generally is another type of mold. Cubensis mycelium is usually very uniform unless there is a contaminant riding along, bacterial or fungal.

Wispy, tomentose growth doesn’t always signify a contaminant and could very well be due to agar recipe and the amount of readily accessible nutrients.

Lower your nutrient content in order to force a different morphology. Lower nutrient content  in your agar will usually look more rhizo as the organism/mycelium is searching for the food in order to sustain itself and colonize more rapidly in order to consume and complete its life cycle.

Here are some pictures to compare and begin to better train your eyes for what to look for:

Here's a better pic. It still looks sketchy, just with better lighting and focus. My gut says it's an imposter...

Its wild to me how mesmerizing those pics are. But yeah, mine doesn't look like that. When you say "disorganized", do you mean how the "threads" seem to be criss crossing randomly in all random directions?

More like it’s spreading out in waves. Or  jutting out in spikes.

Mushroom spread out in a circle.

That tracks. It looks dry, grayish, and it popped up VERY quickly. This is day 2 of its presence, and it was very noticeable yesterday when I first noticed it, and I've been looking at them probably every 12hrs. I googled cobweb mold and it says it grows much faster than myc and looks a whole lot like what I've got, so I think you nailed it. Appreciate the help, amigo.

Ok,I think I understand. That barren bullseye area was suspect from the get, and then the ring of thickness followed by more whispy growth...I knew it didnt look right, but confirmation is always reaasuring. I appreciate ya.

I suspect these look kind of strange in the caps due to bacteria. Does anyone know whether this suggests anything beyond the aesthetic? Would you expect it to have any effect on potency?

Why did my media bottle discolour like this? That's never happened before.

Also that's the last time I do a PC cycle with both agar and grain. The agar mixture got all fucked up presumably from being in the PC for too long.

You don't consider those caps to at least be misshapen?

I do the usual 10/10/1 to 500ml filtered water recipe for my agar. Instead of the 10g of LME how much should i cut it down to for it to "reach out" for growth?

I took my grain jar out of the PC and 10 minutes later it's making a high pitched noise. The lid is on tight. Is it messed up?
