OMG I finally  did the thing! I'm sure I'll have a lot more fails and questions but seriously thanks for all the help everyone.

I started this hobby on 05/08 I've thrown out a lot of jars, 2 66qt totes, and 3 shoeboxes to get here.

Are they looking good?

Noobie here with more dumb questions you guys can roll your eyes at. How do you know if a grain jar is 100% and ready for bulk? I've got 2 right now that need to spread to the last bit of the top but once that happens are they assumed to be good? Like should they be good through the center of the grains? Pics for reference

When they are completely covered in mycelium. The middle will be done if the surface is. Then you have to do the dance I mentioned last night before spawning

Word. I've been doing the dance every time I head downstairs to check on them so that's good. Might be why my first grow is looking promising

Been doing lots of reading here as I'm new and want to become super familiar with the newest teks as I improve my methods.  The Updated PF Tek states the following right after Inoculation -> Incubation:

Step 5: The Wait - Incubation

This is the longest part of the whole process. The wait. Incubation should take place at 68 to 75 degree's Fahrenheit (20 to 24 Celsius). Germination usually takes about a week and full colonization can range from anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks. I store mine on a shelf in a room, pretty straight forward. Here are some cakes in various stages of the process

Question: the jars in the picture are out in the open air without any covering on them.  Could you guys please explain how contam is kept out during this step?  Are the holes small enough that nasties won't get in? Does the top verm layer keep them out?  Something else completely different?

Should these jars not be touched at all during incubation to help prevent contam?

I used outdated tek for my first go before I found this site, and want to make sure I understand everything well before my next go around.  Thanks!

The verm layer acts as a filter for contam, you nailed it!

Sweet, thanks!  Should touching of the jars be minimized during incubation to prevent contam?  Or does it not really matter that much?

I feel like I would want to turn them a bit to see the other side, but obviously if it increases the chances of contam I would not.

Touch and look at them all you like, that's what the filter's for. Just leave the lids on tight and you should be good! I manhandled my PF jars this morning lol

The cakes shrink while colonizing so yes moving the jars should be minimized to keep the dry vermiculite layer intact. It gets easier to leave them alone.

Me again, getting increasingly paranoid as my jars get closer to complete. Found these little spots on a jar that's about 90%. Sporophores? Is it gonna be toast? Should I separate it and do a 1:1 bulk and pray to the machine Elves it fruits okay? Pic kinda sucks cause I had to zoom in a lot to get them visible

Never noticed this on my cakes when I packed it full of verm, but that makes sense. Thanks for the correction!

I cannot tell by the resolution but it doesn’t bode well. Spawning to bulk only reduces your chances because when you break up the spawn, the weakened mycelium will take time to recover. Can you get a higher resolution picture?

I thought the photo quality might be a hindrance. I'll post better pics after my wife gets home. Not willing to mess with her $2k camera unattended. That's a guaranteed angry wife

Hi again. Any chance this is myc? Or more likely penicillium?

Day 5 after inoculation.

It's from a kit (acquired before knowing about shroomery).  I was dumb...trying to become enlightened here.
