COuld it be the spores were mislabeled ? Or is this normal for them to look so different?

The inside of the mushrooms is pithy kinda like p.e. .

Even well stabilized cultures can toss reverts. Remember ALL the APE lineage are just stabilized mutants of a brown cube.

Folks in the US who have sent spore swabs: do you send them as First Class Latters with the non-machinable surcharge, or in padded envelopes as a parcel, or something else? If you send non-machinable, do you have to hand the letter to someone at the post office?

I could take the chance with the machines, but I think the 6-inch wooden ones I have would get pretty chewed up.

I've received many a broken wooden shaft swabs - which is why I go out of my way to find plastic shaft ones or wrap qtips in foil an PC.

Also in a non so friendly state - have had swabs rip the envelope so bad its surprising it even made it here. Some have been delivered in a usps "apology for inconvenience" bag.
So it's always a little nerve racking when a parcel is damaged to the point that the contents can be exposed.

Which is another reminder for folks not just tossing it in a lope and sending.

Rather it be taped to a folded printer paper or holiday card.

Some successfully unbroken swabs have been taped to a strip of cardboard.

OK, thanks. Seems like a 30 degree bend through the sorting machine would destroy a swab even with padding, but I'll have to give that a shot.

or you could just send a smashed wedge in a food baggie in a normal envelope

Definitely my preferred approach (between folded card stock), but spores are more convenient in some circumstances.

Truthfully, I'd rather send prints or wedges, but sometimes I will only have swabs or just one print to share with multiple people.

Dammit. I will Neil Patrick Harris familiar couldn’t possibly get enough that at the end of the day it’s the thrill of the acquisition, collection and dispersal of spores. It’s like usps is the “pollinate” each other
You can pinch the swab off when you’re making it (my preference) or at the end all together when there is nothing left to do.

Just pinch it in half so it will fit in the mailer and not break during transit.

Quick question. Hows that look at a glance. Can grab a pic uncovered a bit later. This is from a AIO grow bag, about 1 pound. GT mss.

Impossible to tell from that photo.

MSS to anything other than PF cake is a crapshoot. You will most likely get some mushrooms, but don't expect much.

And when growing in bags, you can use the bag itself as a fruiting chamber. Just cut off the very top and use something to fasten it closed. After it pins, you can open it daily to give it some fresh air. Poke holes or make slits if it's starving for air even with the top open.

Check out Beef's Hitchhiker's Guide for more reliable methods.

Understandable. I should note that I do have another aio of the same brand going that i'm doing just that with. I'm more or less just fucking around and finding out with various things to see what works, what doesn't, then planning to share and ask where I went right or wrong. Thanks.

Meant to reply in regard to the aio instructions.

A leading cause of bacillus in grain jars is a wet filter. if the filter material is in a position to get wet with grain juice when you shake, that is the likely culprit.  A wet filter, especially if it's wet from grain juice will colonize with bacteria all the way through.  Your filter needs to stay bone dry at all times.
RR

With this said, is it then bad practice to ISO/H202/Bleach filters discs that currently have colonizing spawn beneath them?  Is there something about a wet filter that allows contaminants in even if it has sanitizing properties?

Yes most filters. If liquid pass through there not sterile anything not sterile on a high nutrients medium contamination after its been steriled

I dont think dude has made a single valid claim or told one true story since hes been here. I just don't really believe anything he says to be genuine at this point.

i would have him on ignore already but its too interesting to watch it unravel..

why mix anything with millet? Just use Millet if you have it. More spawn points.

Personally I never had any luck with millet. Had more jars of millet go bad than ever did of rye.

I find just millet is fine too, and it's what i normally use. however I was told by two friends on the site recently that adding another type of grain to the mixture helps make contamination in the spawn more readily identifiable.... added texture or something to that effect. I'll have to text him later to remember exactly what was said.
something like that. maybe it's baloney.
i had heard the same thing from several people before, but just passed it off as a weird habitual superstition thing, or whatever you like to call it. vestigial practice.
just millet definitely has worked fine for me for years; i am just wondering if there's any added benefit to adding.

I don't know that I agree with that, but who knows. I didn't like millet because it's so small that if you get it even slightly too wet it goes anerobic in the middle. I went back to rye after 9 of 10 jars of millet turned green when I had been having 99.9% good results with rye.
