Spawn bags and bacterial contamination

Hi everyone.

I've been trying to figure out a good way to use bags of sterilized grain with some healthy mycelium from agar plates but I keep running into the exact same issue no matter what I try.

Inevitably the bag colonizes almost fully, like 98% and then stops. The mycelium become soft. The color goes from a bright white to white with an of-gray hue. Once I open the bag I get hit with an unmistakable sour smell.

That's 6 bags in a row that went through the exact same scenario.

I tried 2 different grain vendors. I tried 4 different ways to inoculate, always using either a flow hood or a SAB.

At this point I'm starting to think it's my storage space that's the problem but that would imply the bacteria in dealing with are able to go through the 2 micron filters which I thought wasn't possible.

Forgot to mention I slammed the last 2 bags with 3cc of H2O2, shook and mixed well,  stored in fridge for 2 days before inoculation,  but same results.

I'm sure some of you are going to tell me that I need to sterilize my own grain. For the sake of this thread please understand I'm trying to operate as discreetly as possible and acquiring and using any sort of canning / pressure cooker is off the table. Hence I'm buying bags of sterilize grains.

Also if the bags of grain themselves were the issue I imagine I would have encountered other types of contamination as well over the span of 6 attempts.

Basically, my questions for all of you experts are those:
- could bacteria go through the 2 micron filter?
- would it help to transfer the grain to jars for inoculation?
- how would you do it if you had the same constraints?

I have about 10 plates of clean mycelium on agar in the fridge and I'm waiting for your feedback before I try again.

I understand correctly you put agar in your bags? Do you use flowhood or SAB, or what?

Seems like you introduce contam during inoculation.

Did you already had parallel unincolated bags? (To see whether those also contaminate).

That's correct. I've tried with both the SAB and my small flowhood.

I haven't tried to buy spawn bags and just let them seat to see what happens. Not a bad idea. It would rule out the environment variable if it stays healthy... or gets a different type of contamination.
