I'm a newbie, is this bacterial contamination?
    #28789023 -

OK, so I'm new in the hobby and just plated my first spores nine days ago. This is what the plates look like. These are all from the same spore syringe (Golden Teacher). What do you think, are they clean or is there bacterial contamination? I'm surprised the blue agar turned colors as these developed, I wasn't expecting that.

My agar recipe was 250 mL reverse osmosis water, 5 grams agar, 3.75 grams malt extract, and a few drops of blue food coloring. I poured 12 plates, all are clean and clear with no contamination, so I know my technique and laminar flow hood is working well. I even cracked open the empty hot petri dishes in the hood to dry after sterilization, then poured the agar, opened them up again for 30 minutes to cool to prevent condensation. I have zero contamination on the eight plates that were not inoculated.

I also just poured some black plates today. On those I used 250 mL water, 5 grams agar, 3.75 grams malt extract, 1 gram carbon powder, and 25 mg gentamycin sulfate antibiotic. I inoculated 8 of those plates with spores using a variety of psilocybe strains, some cubensis, mexicana and tampanensis. I'm thinking of starting cultures on antibiotic plates when starting with spores, then moving them to blue plates once I know they are clean.

Here are a few pics of my setup, what to you think... By the way, cultivating Psilocybe species is legal here in Colorado, you just can't sell anything that contains the active ingredients (but you can give it away to someone who is at least 21 years old!).

Hi Stargazer. For your first plates these are amazing. I don’t see any contamination. And, your parafilm skills are great

Weird to see the mycelium removing the coloring. I did a double take on that, also

Welcome to the craft from another newbie

Cools. Also don't read to much propaganda about where it's legal to grow actives species the feds will still make an example of you.

I don't think the feds will mess with legal mushrooms in Colorado.  MMJ is illegal on the federal level and there's a dispensary on every corner of every street.  As long as you don't sell it they won't mess with you.

decriminalized for having doesn't apply to growing. It's also only covers 2 Oz fresh weight in total. Learning the legal landscape is important. Your in the same state that spend time arresting and shooting a guy for have 2 more pot plants then legally allowed. I do want you to grow and grow a lot, but don't think it's legal to grow anywhere because it isn't.
