overcoming bacterial contamination - safe?
    #2256960 -

I have a question here which isn't trivial because I have a very limited amount of mycelium to work with and no spores. I have two PF-jars which developed "sour rot" bacterial contamination while they were colonizing. Rather than throwing them away I left them alone for a while (as in, several weeks).

I come back, and it looks like the cubensis mycelium won the turf war against the bacteria in both jars. They're completely white, inside and out (I chopped them both in half to check). Is it safe to fruit these guys?

I wouldn't take any chances.

try to fruit and get a print so you can continue to grow, afterwords your should wash your fruiting chamber very well. I wouldnt eat the fruit, thats if it does fruit.

I guess I'm confused... is there any particular reason it wouldn't fruit? I can't see any sign of bacterial activity at the moment, and they don't have the characteristic sour smell.

Usely anything contamed will have a very hard time fruiting, if it does start to smell toss it right away. Hope ya get some prints out of it though so you can keep going. Good luck.

Would eating a shroom grown from a cake that had signs of bacteria be harmful to you? If so, how?

yes, and you can read all about it in the FAQ. Here's a clue...BACTERIA are tiny little bugs that make people SICK!

As an alternative idea... would it make any sense to try and make corncob slurry with these? That's the tek where you shred the cake and mix it with crushed corncob to make a bulk spawn.

why would you risk infecting all your spawn?

Because corncob costs essentially nothing? Basically the question is, do previously contammed cakes have trouble fruiting because of damage to the mycelium, or because the cake itself still contains viable bacteria?

If this would go better in the contam forum I can crosspost it there or a mod can move it or whatever, but I was under the impression that that was basically for "here's a picture of my cake does this look okay".

I don't know anyhting about slurry, but isn't it's purpose to spawn a bulk substrate? Instead of casing and fruiting the corncob?

Correct, although I suppose the corncob could be cased directly. Went ahead and crossposted to the Contams forum btw.

Excellent superspawn material & replacement for straw.
Remember from Stamets that contams are lessoned by expanding spawn into difference materials at each step. The contams make a foothold in one material but then have to start all over again in a different one, giving the mushroom spawn a chance to compete.

I was inspired by the corncob idea. However I used whole wheat spawn directly on the hydrated & PC'd corncobs in a patch bag. It was about 8 days before full take over at 20% spawn to corncob by volume. Fast takeover means less chance of contamination.

I consider corncobs as spawn to be added in equal amounts to worm castings(53% water). This is maily because they lose some water over time. I talk'n about a small accumulation/pool over time even after draining overnight beforehand.
