Bacterial contamination? Pics..

Hey,

have a look to this cap and notice the dark spot. First time i get this and i'm wondering if it's a bacterial contamination. Looks like it to me..

Yes, it looks like you have some bacterial blotch on that cap.
If it keeps occurring you should clean the whole setup with bleach solution.

I believe they can make you sick if the contamination has spread to bigger proportions. As it looks now, you can cut carefully the infected area and dry them quickly IMHO.
If you have only a few mushrooms like this one you should use only the stems or even toss them to play it on the safe side.

I agree with MAIA;

'Bacterial blotch' is the term used for a certain visual look. . .most often, the organism responsible for this look is very benign, Pseudomonas spp. [tolassi sp? fluorescens, putida].  The same organism [or very similar] invariably coats the outside of any plastic-wrapped chicken you buy at the store.  Pseudomonas does NOT like to be dried, and any such infected fruits will be fine for consumption if completely dried.  They are likely fine regardless, but that's just my personal opinion :wink:

That having been said, there is something that a person should be wary of.  The picture you showed is a great example of a low-level infection.  As 'bacterial blotch' becomes more advanced, other bacteria can begin to take hold [aka 'secondary infections'].  The black goo that fruits can turn into is a hodgepodge of different bacteria, most of which won't kill you, but definitely are not worth messing around with.  [A bacterially-ridden dog turd won't kill you.]
 
So the rule I would recommend is to harvest bacterial-blotch fruits as soon as the problem is noticed, or as soon as you see it begin to worsen.  Dry them completely and you will be fine.  This stuff is easily spread by contact, so be careful not to spread it around.  IME bacterial blotch is tray-specific, and does not tend to need to be bleached out like in a mold scenario, but heeding MAIA's advice would not be a bad idea.

The next day this cap was fully mature and the blotch didn't really grow. I simply harvested the cap and removed the infected part. No other sign of infection except on top of the cap.

Well thanks a lot MAIA and Suntzu. That was an interesting read.

Now I can eat dog turds without being afraid of death.
