I'm not trying to trash on anyone who's new and confused, but I think at some point we have to factor in the changes that are happening in the world at large.

As things like tree frog's prison bid become less likely, and psilocybin quietly trails behind cannabis on the path to full legal and societal acceptance, we're bound to see more people who would never have contemplating growing in the bad old days.

The entire idea of "busted is busted, so if I'm gonna take that chance I'm gonna make it worth my while" is gradually fading away. And we're just bound to see more people who are saying "well, my jurisdiction decriminalized growing mushrooms at home, so what's the fastest/cheapest/most convenient way to pull that off?"

Naturally, this is also fueled by these clowns on YouTube and Reddit, many of whom would never have dared to stick their necks out like that a couple decades ago.

lol I meant off each tub brother.  I got busted with a half pound.  Just growing in dub tubs.

Now I grow in a tent because I can.  Switched to edibles mostly when I got out.

Even in places that social acceptance has outrun legality, like here where I live, we're seeing more people wanting to grow.

The neighbor across the street wanted to try microdosing.  Someone on line that pitches herself as an 'integration coach' (with zero credentials in psychedelic harm reduction or psychedelic psycho therapy) was pitching a $200 grow kit to my neighbor.

I was like,fuck that shit, let's grow some stones!  You can keep them in bags so it will be way lower profile than what she was trying to sell you.

Pitch was, grow enough to micro dose for a year.  So, like a QP from my napkin math.  I didn't look at the kit but I'm guessing it was PF tek, some spores (if lucky), and a fruiting chamber with way more bells and whistles then needed.

Plus, I had already gotten back into growing cubes.  Friend was having trouble with his SGFC so I helped him grow some bulk.

Maybe you should move to Colorado.  Of course if you sell them you'll be in the same situation.

A couple years ago there was a loose consensus that potency is at its peak when the veil tears, after which most of the weight put on is water weight. Sounds strange in retrospect. Is this still a held belief by anyone?

Beliefs are not very scientific.:lol: Impossible to determine without advanced scientific testing that doesn't rely on the subjective perspective of a human. When it comes to mushrooms, I stick to the guideline that other delicacies of the land such as citrus, avocados, mangos, women ect are best enjoyed when fully ripe and mature.

Nobody's had the resources to actually do the required testing. It's maybe a possibility now. I know my own beliefs have evolved over the years, but they're based strictly on bioassays.

I personally believe that it depends somewhat on the genetics. Some varieties will pump out a bunch of extra stem tissue after the caps open. And for a number of reasons, I think it's new material with new actives in it. Other varieties pretty obviously decline after the caps open. I'm not sure I like the term "water weight" to describe any of it, though. That, to me, is just fruits getting waterlogged. I think that as long as fruits are getting bigger (and not just swelling up), there's some kind of cell division happening.

One big issue in even trying to discuss this is differentiating between total active content and relative active content. And unless you believe in one extreme or the other- e.g., NO new actives develop after the pin stage vs. Actives concentration is ALWAYS the same at all stages of growth- then we're discussing curves that we don't even know the real shape of, despite hunches based on anecdotes.

Though honestly, cubensis may be one species that I don't really see as having a peak ripeness. For flavor, texture, and potency, I personally prefer fresh-picked pins. That's not usually a terribly practical option, though.

Yeah, same. I feel like gradual potency improvements in my grow make this a particularly difficult question to nail down. And increasingly pointless, because everything works fine all ground up together.

I still harvest at this time but mostly because spores taste like shit.  True of edibles too.  Pick before spores develop.

Just FYI... Avocado's actually won't ripen on the tree. You need to pick them to get the process started. I only say this because I once lived in a house that had an avocado tree. I thought it was a dud because the they never ripened. It wasn't until several years later that I learned my mistake.

also, to the people that put the avacado pit into the guac bc they think it will magically slow

Hey guys, I was wondering if there is an established consensus on the benefits of coffee/caffeine/coffee grounds in grain boiling or grain jars, I know that for tubs it is a no go.

On a similar note, I was wondering if we should do a Potency Thread similar to this one, where we establish everything we know that does/does not help potency. Perhaps that info could be contained just here.

I use it for sclerotia.  I don't know if others still do.

I've ran other species on the coffee jars and it doesn't hurt anyway.  Have 16 bags of enoki colonizing now that were done like this.

But yeah, if you're looking for potency, ms -> agar -> grow (multiple tubs) -> clone (multiple fruits) -> agar -> grow -> bioassay.  Keep the winners.

Shoeboxes and other small foot print methods work well for this.

You can also start with potent genetics.  PE, APE, etc.  Exotics (maybe not start here but if you have a few grows under your belt that's another option.)
