That's an actual thing? Like, people have done write-ups on scoring the surface with a fork?

Well, shit. I guess I've been doing "tear the old dried-out crust off a bacterial substrate with your bare hands" TEK, then.

All just ultimately futile stopgap measures after you've screwed up, and/or a sub is past its prime and you're desperately holding onto it. If it's healthy, the old material on the surface isn't going to affect rehydration much.

Which reminds me of cutting trich out and salting the hole (pointless because the trich isn't just where you saw it fruit and turn green, and a substrate isn't like a loaf of bread you can cut the mold off of before eating)

Or maybe I'm misinterpreting. Was this something people were doing at or near spawning, to encourage pinning or something?

From what I’ve seen a lot of people tend to think it can revive overlay by forking it.

SGFC still used for pans? I thought the water tub pretty much replaced the sgfc because its just better at doing the same job.

Pan Cakes are a specific tek for growing pans and other exotics. They're cased and top fruited rather than being birthed like standard BRF cakes. Instead of placing them on the perlite, you make a hole and set the dish into it so that the surface of the cake is just above the perlite. If anyone knows a better method of fruiting them, I'd love to know.

I don't do much tearing anymore, but I am generally in the habit of running my tubs out until I see obvious rot or contamination. Sometimes really clean and robust substrates will kick out like five giant monsters long after I've written them off for being shrunk and wrinkly. They're often side and bottom pins, but I don't discriminate. There's something oddly satisfying about a substrate that's shrunken down to nothing and lost half its water weight kicking out bottom pins that lift the entire thing.

i hate looking at them.  ive long since filled the void for demand as far as i can establish so my perogative is just enjoying the canopies.  ive thrown out entire tubs that were guitly of little more than a sparse pinset.

Forking is noob voodoo, also, fuck gordo. He's a plagiarist, and should never be cited nor respected in a community that prides itself in supporting the intellectual property of the giants who've come before us.

Zero respect.

I did not know this about Gordo.

What would we do without institutional knowledge.

Yo stipe, talk to me about this one.

(please and thank you)

Being "sterile" making tubs is a waste of time, it's mostly just noobs doing it because they believe their cakes can become contaminated from anything

Yeah, I can't even really call that one outdated.

Thinking that your tubs will contaminate or otherwise get thrown off if you open the lid. When the lid is designed NOT to completely seal.

I guess it might make sense if you have no comprehension of how sterility and airborne particles work?

I do wear gloves when mixing spawn and substrate, but that's more of a "whatever, might as well" kind of thing. My hands are a repository for all sorts of nasty things from the rest of my day, both organic and inorganic.

Absurd. Everyone knows that Lysol is the gold standard.

Only if you drink it. Purity starts on the inside.

I wish I was joking but I'm not. Peroxide seems to be a gold standard on Reddit.

Clearly Shroomery is blinded by pride. First we badmouth fanning. Then Uncle Ben’s. Now peroxide. This whole thread is like an attack on Reddit.

I do not pretend to have a degree in microbiology or anything.  It just seems that if peroxide actually worked people would be using it.

I wear gloves If I'm taking a picture of something and my hand is going to be in the picture. It's finger print paranoia from cultivating a federally illegal mushroom. I'm sure it's not necessary, there are other ways to track us...and we are sharing on a public forum... But I do it anyway /shrug

Gloves keep your hands and fingernails clean while spawning tubs. Gloves while doing aseptic work prevent particle shedding while handling sterile media. Wash gloves with iso, peroxide is dumb.

I have started learning mush cult on Reddit, and the least I can say is that everyone give it's tips but without much explanation.
So you end up with tons of contradictory info without really knowing what to do.

On the contrary on the Shroomery debate are feed with experience and/or science and the resulting consensus is real even if it's not an absolute truth.

Thanks to this community for the valuable knowledge and the free sharing of it.
