Sometimes I ponder the very existence of Psilocybe cubensis in the natural world. How, without our diligent and careful assistance do these poor fungi survive to spore?

That’s a really arrogant concept to ponder.

We’re too insignificant for something as smart as fungus to spend any energy thinking about us.

I think the desire to be some mad, citizen scientist without the investment in time or effort other than to learn some sciency soumding buzzwords to drop into a sentence from time to time, has created a mass Dunning–Kruger effect with wannabe "mycologists".

Of course he made it up. Who else even knows that many big words other than him. I mean, seriously, what do words like “experiments” even mean?! Stop making up words just to make us feel stupid Stipe!

My first successful grow, I injected spores straight into a grain bag, in my SAB, wearing gloves, respirator, full Tyvek suit, with no airflow while dripping sweat and barely able to breath because of the isopropanol and Lysol fumes. No THAT was mycology!

As a definite noob, who has perused most of this thread (thanks for all the great info), and has done a lot reading on this forum over the last month, I can summarize this list and a lot of the other items I have read as:

1. KISS - all that fancy shit you read about on Reddit, old stuff from this site, etc.  You probably don't need to do it, because it probably doesn't make a damn bit of difference. If something looks simple to you and it has been shown to work, roll with it.

2.  PF tek is great, follow the tek, just save yourself the trouble of drilling 1000s of holes in a hard plastic container.

3.  If your doing grain, clean spawn is king, thus:
  a.  Get/make an SAB and actually learn how to use it properly.
  b.  Learn how to get clean cultures from agar.
  c.  Use/learn good aseptic technique for transfers, inoculations, etc.
  d.  Use iso - or don't.
  e.  Use gloves - or don't
  f.  Get your field capacity right on your substrate
  g.  Your mushies like some fresh air to fruit, you can give it to them using complex "teks" like cracking a lid. Do it from the start.
  h.  Assuming 3a - 3g, don't sweat all the microclimate bullshit, your mushies aren't super picky (at least cubes), just react to obvious issues.

Accurate?

Your tubs microclimate isn't bullshit and is actually really important. However, if you follow what you wrote, properly prepare your substrate and choose a correct fruiting chamber, you won't have to worry about it.

I find cubes can be a bit picky with their conditions, but it is really easy to give them the right ones. My first grows the conditions were bad and it really showed.

That's the way she goes, boys. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't, cause that's the fuckin way she goes.

Yeah, the last bit might have been a little harshly worded.  But I think we are getting at the same thing.  If you do the fundamentals well, you shouldn't have to stress too much towards the end--maybe just make some small adjustments.

All this coming from someone who has, hitherto, not yet had an opportunity to make said adjustments.  So, yeah, just glad people such as yourself have provided enough knowledge to show that this isn't rocket science, and can be done without having any unusual tools or overly complex methods.  I am a very busy person during the day normally, so I would be out on this hobby if that was the case.
