I used to do it religiously, actually saw improvement when I stopped. I think all it really does is wash some of your myc away.

And also, this just occurred to me:

Mycelium grows into new material. Even assuming that dunking adds water to the surface, or allows the grains to soak some up, it's kind of irrelevant. The mycelium is growing into whatever substrate you have, and getting its water from that source. Taking a bath beforehand isn't going to do anything.

I think that in some cases, dunking/rinsing maybe helped wash off excess bacteria, buying enough extra time before the crash that it really seemed to help. I know that was part of my motivation in doing it, until I also realized how absurd it is to try to get rid of bacteria with a quick wash.

Yeah, correk on all points.  I think it was very popular in it's day. I don't think people applied as much critical thought to methodology as we do now. It's been interesting to watch the evolution of cult over the years, this site and the hard working, clever, citizen scientist types, have really developed a wide variety of accessible, reliable techniques for the cultivation of so many diverse species.

It really is something, when you think of it. Mushrooms used to be soley in the hands of only a very select few, now it's open to everyone, and tailored to nearly every skill level and preference.

Ozone is a byproduct of using a UV Lamp to sterilize a room, or the contents therein…. It is very harmful to humans as it will temporarily disable the cilia in your lungs and windpipe.  If you enter an enclosed room and breath the “air” in the room immediately after running a UV light, it will not be long before you feel the choking effect of ozone.  Chronic exposure and acute exposure can cause permanent damage.

Ozone is also very corrosive to many materials.

So your greatest risk of ozone exposure is from the byproduct of UV light use.

That said, UV light will wipe out contaminants.  I’ve seen this point disputed elsewhere on the Shroomery but those disputes do not stand up to the data.  Dangerous?  Yes?  But effective?  Yes.

If you want to blast a room with UV just don’t enter it for 8 hours or so afterward.  Give the ozone time to degrade.

Anyone who camps the backcountry knows that water has to be cleaned of evil living things before consuming it.  The greatest innovation for that (since boiling was invented) is a SteriPen, basically a UV light pen that you insert into your water bottle.  100% effect.

So for my money, one truly useful application of UV is in a water tub.  Put the water in and then use UV to clean the water and the tub.

Let the salvo start cause I know some of you folks are going to flame me for this…

Oh, and Beef, your reference to “the beginners mind” above is not, in its original rendition, a caution against having a mind unconstrained by experience (the expert’s mind) but rather is a statement about the value of a beginners mind, open to new ideas and possibilities, not narrowed and secure in its confidence in what it believes to be a final answer.  That is the essence of the contrast between beginners mind and experts mind. Check me if you wish.

The irony is you are using Zen, intended to mean the opposite of your point, to make your point….

It's effective for some applications other than mushroom cultivation, 100%. It has absolutely no place whatsoever in mush cult home laboratories.

UV does not penetrate plastics or glass; UV is light which is subject to the inverse-square law, which limits efficiency for large surface areas like work tables and cabinets; UV has extremely limited effects on bacterial endospores; cannot penetrate grain; cannot be used to sterilize liquids like agar or LC.

The water in your tub is tap water, it's not sourced from a sewage system, it's fine. UV lights are beneficial when used in well systems in line and potentially coupled with a filter, but that's just common SOP for rural communities.

UV is essentially useless, this statement is supported by the National Institute of Health, don't be a noob.

All working surfaces are sufficiently sanitizing using 70% ISO, all other requirements are fulfilled by the use of autoclaves.

All of that plus the additional hazards associated with UV= dumb idea.

Quote:
The sterilization/decontamination activity of UV lights is limited by a number of factors, including:

Penetration – In the dynamic air streams of BSCs, microorganisms beneath dust particles, plastics, and work surfaces are not affected by the UV light because it cannot penetrate particles so far from the UV source.

Relative humidity – The germicidal effects of UV light drop off precipitously when relative humidity is above 70%.
Temperature and air movement – The optimum temperature for the UV lamp to be effective is 77-80 degrees F. Temperatures below this range result in reduced efficacy, and air movement can exacerbate this.

Cleanliness – Dust and dirt block the germicidal effectiveness of the UV lamp, so weekly cleanings are necessary.

Age – Check UV lamps every six months to assure proper function, as the amount of germicidal wavelength emitted decreases with bulb age and hours of use.

Overuse – UV lights are routinely left on overnight or longer in an effort to decontaminate workspaces, but this practice can result in the germicidal wavelength no longer being produced by the bulb.
For these reasons and other concerns, the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) does not recommend the use of UV lights in BSCs.

P.S: flamming is totes against them rulz, bub, nobody going to flame you, criticism of your ideas is 100% to be expected.

🔥 yeah!  Call me Sam Macgee …

“ The water in your tub is tap water, it's not sourced from a sewage system, it's fine. UV lights are beneficial when used in well systems in line and potentially coupled with a filter, but that's just common SOP for rural communities”

We have well water…

It has not made is sick, ever, but it is not treated. And it is a shallow well (25’ or so).

The uv light is freaking huge and it gets placed directly over the water, not off to the side. Yes, almost all UV-C is blocked by glass. No, invisible airborne water does not significantly block UV-C. Yes, it does not pass through opaque material. Yes, it does kill by breaking up DNA, but is not full effective in breaking down DNA in bacterial endospores (thanks for that, it made interesting study).

As for 70% iso being effective, it can be, but…what Ive read in multiple sources is that it must remain on the surface being cleaned for 15 minutes minimum, which is why 70%; anything higher would evaporate too quickly to complete the cleaning.

Sources suggest that 10% bleach is more effective…

Where contamination is concerned I’d venture that there is no such thing as too much caution; given a grower’s willingness to expend the effort and funds.

Sometimes I ponder the very existence of Psilocybe cubensis in the natural world. How, without our diligent and careful assistance do these poor fungi survive to spore?

70% iso being more effective than say, 91% or 99% has nothing to do with evaporation time. It has to do with cell penetration. Look it up. It would probably be interesting reading for you.

In the wild, only one in a billion spores needs to germinate for successful reproduction. However, we try to increase those odds since there aren’t many of us that want to try almost a billion times before getting germination. Good luck.
